TO THE VIRGINS TO MAKE MUCH OF TIME

Robert Herrick

Gather ye Rose buds while ye may

Old time is still a-flying
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun

The higher he’s a-getting
The sooner will his race be run
And nearer he’s to setting.
That age is best which is the first
When youth and blood are warmer
But being spent, the worse and worst
Time still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time
And while ye may, go marry
For having lost but once your prime
You may forever tarry.

READER-RESPONSE ANALYSIS (TO THE VIRGINS TO MUCH OF TIME)

The poem by Robert Herrick titled “To the Virgins to Make Much of Time” is a
poem that discusses how important time is, not just to the women and/or virgins but to
all people. Words in the first stanza are perfect evidence to what the poem is trying to
tell to its readers. Life is short and one’s time in living life in this world is just limited so
make sure to make the best experience in every second of it.

Regret is always found in the end, this is something that we should remember,
and therefore making the best of time out of our life is what can eradicate the regret that
is waiting for us in the end of the road. For me, the virgin in the poem is actually not
those who are virgin but those who are afraid to go out to the world and enjoy
everything that it has to offer.

“Then be not coy, but use your time; and while ye may, go marry”. Don’t be afraid
to try, marry your life and spend your time in doing things that would make you happy.
Do not be like shy and timid, go out and be outrageous, enjoy your time while you still
can. Be not coy; be not shy like those women who are timid and frugal in their lives. Live
as if you’ll die tomorrow.
