As I mentioned in the previous question, we are now seeing the effect of the pandemic in
every field. One of these areas is offices. There are various measures taken in offices to
prevent the spread of the virus, but even if they have wounds, these measures have ergonomic
deficiencies.
First, I want to start with the benefit. I think the fact that the offices are closed around caused
the employees to work in a quieter environment. The quietness of the environment is a factor
that relaxes the employee ergonomically. However, in my opinion, the closed offices have
ergonomic disadvantages as well.
As the first harm, we can say that the communication of employees with each other decreases.
This may not be seen as a major damage from an ergonomic point of view. However, due to
the pandemic, our communication with people has already decreased. The communication of
people may decrease further with the office becoming like this, and this may cause people to
experience psychological problems. This can cause people to feel uncomfortable due to their
environment and decrease their productivity.
Another disadvantage of this type of closed offices is the inability to communicate as well as
the decrease in communication. For example, let's assume that there is a glass panel between
the customer and the banker in a bank. Because of the panel in between, both of their voices
will hardly go to each other. Also, if we consider that a mask is worn, this situation increases
the miscommunication between the two individuals, and this is an ergonomic disadvantage.
Mask, which is one of the new office conditions, is also an ergonomically harmful factor.
Office workers are constantly working in a closed environment. However, the constant use of
masks causes employees to not get enough oxygen. This causes employees to get tired more
quickly both physically and mentally. This is another disadvantage caused by the pandemic in
terms of ergonomics.
