DEFENSIVE ZONE

COVERAGE
§ The purpose of defensive zone coverage is two-fold:
1.Stop the initial scoring threat

§ 2.Get the ball back ,and break out of your zone

Overview
The set up in this section will not only accomplish the
first objective but will put you/teammate in good
breakout position once they regain possession of the ball.
RESPONSIBILITIES AS A PLAYER TO DEFEND
§ Right Defensemen

Right § • Pressures ball carrier


• Decides wheather to “force or contain” • Hit and Pin
Defensemen situation presents itself
• Stick on stick body on body
• Look to recover quick
Left Defensemen § • Position off weak side post
(Weak side) § • Cover front net down low
§ Corner of Box:Position of support for Strong side
defensemen or Winger when ball goes to point

§ First man to the ball when RD makes pin


Center § Be aware of opposing forward on ball side boards
§ If RD is manned out (2 on 1) Center must come in and
help(provide support)
§ Position in slot off far post
§ Support LD on far post (pick up any loose men in front
of the net in mid tohigh slot area–LD wil pick up loose
men in low slot)
Left Winger § • Be aware of ball going around boards to weak side
(Weak side) (you need to Anticipate and beat the opposing
defenseman to the boards.

§ • Covers lot and weak side opposing defensemen


§ Must be aware of both opposing defensemen

RightWinger § Cover balL- side opposing defense man if ball moves


up to the point
(Strong Side) § Must be aware of both opposing defensemen
