Social media, society and teenagers
social media has become an important communication tool for humans in the past
few years (Riley, 2020). Nowadays, more than half of people world wide use social media.
Several researches shows that today 54.3% of the people worldwide are connected on
social media. A number that equals to 3.80 billion of users in the whole world (Kemp,
2020).
In addition social media brought many advantages to the human being. However,
it's impacts are quite visible. It changed the way people communicate, deal with business,
interact with politic and most important it has changed human’s lives within society
(Guzman, 2016). This essay will describe the impact of social media, on society and
teenagers, by changing the society, and affecting in teenager’s lives.

Social media has grown, becoming part of people's lives and as outcome with impacts
on society, as well as on teenager’s lives (Ahmad, 2020). The impacts it has had on society are
quite visible. First, it has changed people's social life, that is, the way people communicate and
live within the society. Anecdotally, social media has turned this generation into one of the
most antisocial society of ever (Amedie & Jacob, 2015). Users are becoming addicted to their
social networks, many of whom are becoming antisocial. Social media became an essential part
of people's lives, and now people are living based on online interactions (Mousseau, 2015).
Today, a large part of the society, such as teenagers, young people and adults, prefer to
keep online interaction rather than "face to face" interaction. Nowadays people spend more
time texting, playing online games or watching videos on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube
and others social media apps than what they spend on personal interactions (Mousseau, 2015).
The personal interaction between the human being is decreasing and people are
becoming lonely. The human’s behavior changed, due to the increasing increase of social
network, and now they are turning into antisocial, addicted, and lonely people that gets hurt
much more easily and prefer to isolate themselves from others. There is no doubt that social
media has had a huge impact on society, changing people's lives (Tim Mousseau, 2015).
Another impact that social media has had on society besides changing people’s lives,
was the issue of the intense circulation of information. Cyber harassment, Cyber bullying,
invading of privacy, Fake News, all problems related to the spread of information. Nowadays, it
is easy for, anyone to create a fake profile to disturb or chase another person, and even
disseminate fake information such as lies that hurt people’s reputation (FMP, 2019).
User's reputation and safety on social media are often under threat of the invading of
privacy. Personal information can be hacked, what leads to the spreading or access of intimate
contents that can be used to threats, to make extortion or blackmail to the victim (Akram &
Kumar, 2017). As an example, Katy Perry in 2016, that had her Twitter profile hacked by a
Romanian guy that also disseminated “fake news” on her profile. (Roxana, 2017).
Nowadays, dealing with fake news is not a easy job, because once it starts spreading, it
is hard to stop. It becomes difficult to deal with the information, and know when something is
true or when it is false. Fake news spreads too fast, and it brings bad results in critical moments.
For example, the fake news of “Pizza Gate” that destroyed Hillary’s campaign for US president
in 2016 (Carolina, 2018). Note
Furthermore, nowadays social media also has a huge impact on teenager’s lives,
because it influence in practically all areas of their life. It influence in teens’ social life. The way
teenagers interact in the society has changed. Adolescents are becoming addicted on social
media and as consequence turning into antisocial people, that spend too much time in online
interactions than in personal interactions (Akram & Kumar, 2017).
Spending too much time on social media influence in teens' studies. since it is a
distractor of study, it steal student's time, attention, and dedication from school. As result, they
may loose interest in studies and get low grades. Social media also influence in teens’
personality. Nowadays, many teenagers have a distorted Body Image. The society is completely
full of “perfect people” today. With the use of Photoshop such as Snapchat, teens’ perfect body
images are all around and leading to a distorted body image among many teenagers, what
leads to anxiety an depression sometimes (Akram & Kumar, 2017).
Finally the last impact, which are the problems that affect teens using social media.
Currently, anxiety and depression is affecting many teens. Investigators have proposed a new
problem called “Facebook depression,” which is when teens spend too much time on social
media platforms, and then start having classic signs of depression. The main problem of
adolescents using social media is the over use of it. The anxiety and depression caused by social
media is due to the constant trying to show and project a perfect life or a image of perfection,
which also leads to stress and frustration (Amedie & Jacob, 2015).
Last of all, teens using social media are also susceptible of risks to suffer from problems
such as: cyberbullying, online harassment, sexting, and invasion of privacy, by people who use
social media to disseminate fake, hostile and embarrassing information from another person, as
well as adolescents receiving or sending sexual messages, images or intimal pictures, which can
spread rapidly to other people by the invading of privacy on social media personal accounts (
O’keeffe & Pearson, 2011).
