A LESSON PLAN for Mean of Ungrouped Data
Gaiza Gail S. Denila
Craig N. Refugio, PhD

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the one-hour period (60-minute period), the student should be able to:
(KNOWLEDGE): 1. define mean
(SKILL): 2. compute the mean of the given ungrouped data
(ATTITUDE): 3. tell the importance of getting the mean in real-life situation

SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Mean of Ungrouped Data

B. References: Ed 7 book

C. Materials: visual aids, activity sheets, board and chalk/whiteboard, whiteboard pen,
laptop and projector

D. Strategies/Methods Used: Collaborative learning,

E. Values Integration: keenness, patience, activeness, analysis

II. PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES

A. Preparation (5 minutes)

“Good Morning Class...” “Good Morning Ma'am!”

“Let us pray first, Aaron please lead the Aaron: are you ready to pray classmates?
prayer”
All: Yes we are.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Our Father in
heaven holy be your name, your kingdom
come your will be done. On Earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and
forgive us our sins as we forgive those who
sins against us, do not bring us to the test but
deliver us from evil. Amen”

“Good morning class.” All: Good morning Ma’am Denila.

Please pick up the trashes on the floor (Students pick up trashes, put it on the trash
and arrange your chairs properly” can and arrange the chair)

(Checking of Attendance)

1
“Go back to your proper places for I will be
checking your attendance.”

Yesterday, we discussed about frequency

distribution. What it was all about? (someone raise her hand)

“Yes, Destiny” Destiny: it was all about getting the frequency

of the data, we arranged the numbers in
“Yes, very good. We discussed about ascending form, we performed the tally.
frequency table where you arranged all the
data points in ascending form, then performed
the tally and get the frequency of the data.

We will continue to our next topic and these

are the objectives that each of you must
acquire.
First, you can define what is mean.
Then second, you should know how to
calculate the mean of the ungroup data.
And lastly, you can tell the importance of
finding the mean in real-life situation.

Also remember that whenever you saw me

raising my right hand, so it means that you are
so noisy and I want you to be quite and All: Yes ma’am
whenever you want to answer, just raise your
right hand and wait for me to call your name.
Am I understood?

B. Motivation (5 minutes)

(Playing video clips involving mean)

What have you observed at the video?

Kazuke: the video tells about mean, median
and mode.
That’s right kazuke.

C. Presentation (5 minutes)

Okay! So be with me this morning class, as I

discuss to you about Measures of Central
Tendency of Ungrouped Data.

There are three Measures of Central

Tendency of Ungrouped Data and these are
Mean, Median, and Mode. Today we will just
focus on getting the Mean of the ungrouped
data.

D. Discussion Proper (10 minutes)

Ungrouped data is data given as individual

data points.

2
“Example for this is a score of 15 students in
exam.”

“Can anyone give me another example of (Amor raised his hand)

ungrouped data?”
Amor: The height of 12 basketball players.
“Yes, Amor”
(They clap their hands)
Very good. Let’s give him a round of
applause.

Mean refers to the mean that is used to derive

the central tendency of the data in question.

The Formula of getting the mean:

𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 (𝑛)

Let’s have some examples to really

understand how to use the formula.

1. The scores of 6 students in math-7 quiz are:

5, 8, 7, 5, 6, 5
What is the average of the scores?

What is the Mean of this data?

So, we will use the formula for getting the (They raised their hands)
mean or average:

“What is the formula of Mean?” Espadilla:

𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
“Yes Espadilla” 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 (𝑛)

“Very good Espadilla”

𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 (𝑛)

(someone raise his hand)

5+8+7+5+6+5
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = Rodge: 32 ma’am
6

What is the sum of all data points? Rodge: Ahm, wait ma’am. Let me count it
again.
“Yes, Rodge”
Rodge: 36 ma’am.
“Are you sure?”

“Okay go on”

3
“Yes, very good Rodge”

36
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
6

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 6

The average of the scores is 6.

2. The number of coins owned by 4 students
are:
12, 7, 15, 6
What is the Mean of this data?

𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠

𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = (They raise their hands)
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 (𝑛)
Jelai: 40 ma’am.
12 + 7 + 15 + 6
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = (They raise their hands)
4

What is the total of the data points?

Jocelyn: 4 ma’am.
“Yes, Jelai”

“Very good, then what is the total number of

data points?

“Yes Jocelyn” All: 10 ma’am

“Very good”

40
𝑀=
4
“40 divide it by 4, is equal to?”

“Very good, so the average number of the

coins is 10.

E. Drill/Enrichment Activities (15

minutes)

“To further enhance your knowledge, let’s do

some examples on the board. I want those
who haven’t answered to participate in this
practice. (Students participated in the boardwork.)

Find the mean of the following:

1. The number of marbles owned by the

5 students.
25, 17, 10, 6, 7

4
2. The grades of 7 students in math third
quarter.

90, 89, 84, 92, 96, 85, 87

F. Application (5 minutes)

I will divide this class into 3 groups. All you

have to do is to list down the ages of your
members and find its mean or average. (the students start with their activity)
Choose one representative from your group to
show your outcome later. I will give you 5
minutes to do it.

“Okay time is up. Group 1 present your Group 1 leader presents their outcome.
outcome.”
Very good group one, let’s give them a
fireworks clap. Do you know how to execute “No ma’am”
it?
“Okay, so here it goes.” (executing the
fireworks clap) They do the fireworks clap.

Group 2 leader, show us your work. Group 2 leader presents their work.

Excellent group 2, let’s give them Aling They execute the Aling Dionesia clap.
Dionesia clap.

Last but not the least the Group 3. Group 3 leader present their outcome.

Very good group 3. Let’s give them Boom- They execute the Boom-boom clap.
boom clap.

G. Generalization (3 minutes)

As a recap, what is mean?

Angelo: mean is the average of data points.
Very good Angelo.

How to find the average of ungrouped data?

Jazmine: To find the mean of ungrouped data,
add all data points then divide it to the
number of data points.
Very good Jazmine, thank you. Do have any
question class? All: no ma’am.

Okay! Let’s proceed to evaluation.

III. EVALUATION

Answer the following:

1. Joan’s grades in Third quarter are:

85, 90, 83, 88, 86

5
What is the Mean of her grades?

2. The height of 5 basketball players are:

6ft., 5ft., 6ft., 7ft., 5ft.
What is the Mean of their height?

3. The weight of 6 men are:

50kg, 48kg, 31kg, 56kg, 53kg, 62kg
What is the Mean of their weight?
