COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS METHOD FOR ENGINEERS

(CES513)

PROJECT (10%)

Learning Outcomes:
After completing this group project, students should be able to (CO3:PO9)(A1-A4):
1. Contribute useful ideas to advance work of team (A1)
2. Manage time (prioritize, establish deadlines/milestones, follows timeline, plan for contigencies,
adapt to changes) (A2)
3. Share and accept accountability when working in a team (A3)
4. Foster a positive and productive team members working together, courteous and respectful with
team members and demonstrate a positive attitude using verbal (A4)

CO3: Display responsibility as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary
environment in order to solve complex civil engineering problems
PO9: Ability to function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in
multi-disciplinary settings.

INSTRUCTION

Students in group of maximum five (5) members are required to find the case study either based
on journal paper, thesis or any literature research regarding to the problem that are given to you
in order to guide your group to decide the material and mechanical properties of the element. The
element chosen based on the group number that had been finalized by your lecturer. By using the
finite element software, model that problem and perform the finite element analysis. The report
must include the distribution of the tasks for each member in the group and the evidence must be
provided to show each member has carried out the functions towards the success of the project,
organization chart, minute meeting for each time of the discussion among group members,
preparing the Gantt chart and the details steps involve in finite element analysis.

(40 marks)

Important Note:

The project will be assessed based on group and individual performance in carrying out task assigned.
Each group is compulsory to present their work and the duration of the presentation must be within 10
to 15 minutes. Both final report and video must be submitted on before 13 JULY 2021.

Group 1

Truss bridges normally serve as train bridges due to their strength and durability. Students are required
to propose a truss system for a bridge. Students need to check the maximum deflection and the maximum
stress according to EC3 Standard of such a bridge under static loading using Finite Element Method.
Students must provide a thorough discussion on their observation and findings.

Group 2

Frame structures are usually used to overcome the large moments developing due to the applied loading.
Students are required to propose a frame system for the factory. Students need to determine the
maximum nodal displacements of the frame using Finite Element Method. Students must provide a
thorough discussion on their observation and findings.

Group 3

The elastic stress distribution of an elastic beam in bending is linear distributed. If the beam is no longer
elastic and it will cause the beam failed. Students are required using the Finite Element Method software
to test this hypothesis. Students must provide a thorough discussion on their observation and findings.

Group 4

Beam element is one of the important element in a structure. Students are required to propose beam
elements in a long dam. Students need to check the maximum stress of the dam under static loading using
Finite Element Method. Students must provide a thorough discussion on their observation and findings.

Group 5

Bar element is one of the important element in a structure. Students are required to propose bar elements
in a structure member. Students need to check the maximum stress of the structure under static loading
using Finite Element Method. Students must provide a thorough discussion on their observation and
findings.
