Expt # 7

Title: Acid-Base Titration

Aim: To determine the concentration of an unknown solution of NaOH

Apparatus/Materials

50 cm3 burette, 25 cm3 pipette, pipette filler, distilled water, three 250 cm 3 conical flasks, HCl of
approximately of 0.19 moldm-3, NaOH, phenolphthalein indicator, funnel

Procedure:

1. 25 cm3 of the unknown NaOH solution was pipetted into a conical flask.

2. 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator were added.

3. The solution was titrated with HCl until the endpoint was reached.

4. The experiment was repeated as many times as necessary to obtain accurate results (at least 4
titrations).

Results and observations

TABLE SHOWING THE TITRATIONS OF THE HCl WITH NaOH

Rough Accurate
1 2 3
Initial burette reading/ cm3 1.00 3.00 1.00 0.10
Final burette reading/ cm3 30.00 31.20 28.80 27.80
Volume of HCl used/ cm3 29.00 28.20 27.80 27.70

Discussion:

1. The number of moles of HCl used

HCl(aq )+ NaOH ( aq ) → NaCl (aq) + H 2 O(l)

1 : 1
28.20+27.80+27.70
Average volume of HCl used= ( )
3
= 27.90 cm 3

= (27.90 / 1000) dm 3

= 0.0279 dm 3

Number of moles = molar concentration x volume

= 0.19 moldm -3 x 0.0279 dm3

= 0.005301 mol

2. The molar concentration of NaOH

Number of moles of NaOH according to the mole ratio= 0.005301 mol

Volume of NaOH used= 25 cm3

= (25/1000) dm 3
= 0.025 dm 3

= 0.212 moldm -3

Conclusion: The concentration of NaOH was found to be 0.212 moldm -3.
