Question 1:
An urn contains 4 red balls and 6 black balls. A sample of 4 balls is selected from the urn
without replacement. Let X be the number of red balls contained in the sample, then find
the probability distribution for X.

Solution:

Total no of probabilities (sample size 4)= 10*9*8*4

=5040

Probability (0 red) = Probability of event (BBBB)= 6*5*4*3/5040

=1/14

Probability (1 red) = Prob(RBBB)+P(BRBB)+P(BBRB)+P(BBBR)

=4*6*5*4/5040 + 6*4*5*4/5040 + 6*5*4*4/5040 + 6*5*4*4/5040

=8/21

Probability (2 reds) = Prob(RRBB)+P(RBRB)+P(RBBR)+P(BRRB)+P(BRBR)+P(BBRR)

=3/7

Probability (3 reds) = Prob(RRRB)+P(RRBR)+P(RBRR)+P(BRRR)

= 4/35

Probability (4 reds) = Prob(RRRR)

= 1/210

Probability (0 red) =1/14

Probability (1 red) =8/21
Probability (2 reds) =3/7
Probability (3 reds) = 4/35
Probability (4 reds) = 1/210

Question 1:
A and B play a game in which A’s probability of wining is 2/3. In a series of 8 games, what
is the probability that A will win

i. Exactly 4 games
ii. At least 4 games
iii. 6 or more games
iv. From 3 to 6 games

Solution:

P= 2/3

q= 1-p = 1/3

n= 8

i. Exactly 4 games

P(4) =(8,4)*(2/3)^4*(1/3)^4

=1120/6561

=0.17

ii. At least 4 games

P(>4) = Sum (8,k)*(2/3)^k *(1/3)^(8-k), k(4..8)

=5984/6561

=0.91

iii. 6 or more games

P(>6) = Sum (8,k)*(2/3)^k *(1/3)^(8-k), k(6..8)

=1024/2187

=0.46

iv. From 3 to 6 games

P(<3>6) = Sum (8,k)*(2/3)^k *(1/3)^(8-k), k(3..6)

=5152/6561

=0.78
