Sample Handling from VersaCell

IMMULITE 2000/2500/2000 XPi

• Supports Patient and control sample test orders and the tube is transferred from the
VersaCell to instrument.
• Adjustors and Verifiers must be loaded on the instrument.

ADVIA 1800, Centaur/Centaur XP and Dimension RxL Max/EXL

• The VersaCell will transfer patient samples only.

• Controls will not be transferred and LIS QC orders will not be downloaded to the
instruments.
• Control samples must be loaded on the instrument. The results will be uploaded to the
LIS.

Test Inventory Behavior

• Connected instrument will send test inventory information to the VersaCell differently
dependent on instrument type.
• Below are the triggers that will update inventory on the VersaCell dependent on
instrument type:

o Upon the VersaCell requesting an inventory status from the instrument (Centaur
and Dimension systems)
o Upon a change of inventory on the instrument (Centaur systems)
o If the Instrument sends the status at a regular interval (IMMULITE systems)

• The VersaCell inventory screen will display status and color designation for inventory
issues for IMMULITE, Centaur and Dimension systems.

Test Inventory behavior-IMMULITE systems

• Complete test information is sent every 18 seconds while the IMMULITE system is in
Run mode.
• Sends number of tests left for reagent wedges, bead packs, and allergen vials.
• Inventory errors will display on the VersaCell if test is unavailable for order, reagent is
empty or system is not in run mode.
• Kit Errors on the instrument will appear as inventory errors on the VersaCell.
• Diluent information is sent when going into run mode, manual barcode assignment or
when it becomes available / unavailable on the instrument.

Test Inventory behavior-ADVIA 1800

• ADVIA 1800 does not send any reagent or test inventory information to the VersaCell at
this time.
• Test information is entered in the Test Definition screen on the VersaCell.
• Tests can be enabled or disabled on the Test Activation Screen.
• The VersaCell system handles all inventory errors for the ADVIA 1800 as Order Errors.

Test Inventory Behavior- Centaur Systems

• Full or incremental test map information is sent to the VersaCell:

o VersaCell requests the full test map for all onboard reagents at start up.
o Incremental test information is sent during a run for reagent that has not been
onboard before or for a component change.
• Primary and Ancillary reagent information is sent by test left and threshold status.
• Diluents are sent as ancillary reagents.
• Only sends reagent status inventory errors for primary reagents.
• Other missing or empty components, including ancillary reagents, are seen as Order
Errors.
• Inventory information is sent to the VersaCell whether there is an order or not.

The Centaur systems may not always send updated reagent status to the VersaCell. The
following steps need to be performed if inventory errors occur for tests that are present on the
instrument:

1. Remove all of the applicable reagent packs for the test with Inventory errors.
2. Close the reagent door on the ADVIA Centaur/Centaur XP.
3. Wait until the reagent barcodes are read and the instrument no longer reports
inventory for that test.
4. Reinsert the applicable reagent packs. If possible place them in a new position.
5. Close the reagent door on the Centaur/Centaur XP and verify that the instrument
reports inventory for that test.

Test Inventory Behavior- Dimension Systems

• Tests are defined in the Test Definition screen and activated in the Test Activation
screen.
• Dimension sends test menu and test count information for all assays each time
inventory is requested from the VersaCell.
• Dimension will send a zero test count to the VersaCell in the following scenarios:
o Assay is not on board
o Assay is on board and out of inventory
o Assay qc out or not processed
o Calibration is out

Pg. 3
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

• Inventory error will occur for each of the above scenarios for active tests and the order is
not sent to the Dimension.

Test Inventory Behavior- Quality Control for Dimension Systems-Things to Remember

• If QC is not run on the Dimension the instrument will send 0 tests left to the VersaCell.
• The VersaCell will not transfer tubes to the Instrument for tests that do not have QC
results on the Dimension.
• The VersaCell may display QC issues on the VersaCell Inventory Error Screen for the
Dimension as follows:
o Red indicator indicating ‘Unavailable for Order’. A test order for a test that does
not have QC results needs immediate attention.
o Amber indicator ‘Alert-Empty’. There are no test orders against a test that does
not have QC results. This is a warning to the operator that an inventory or QC
issue needs to be addressed.

Test Enabling / Disabling

IMMULITE Systems

• Tests can be deactivated at the instrument for ALL samples or Patients only, for one or
more specific kit lots or the entire test.
• Regardless of the deactivation level, inventory for relevant kit lots will NOT be
communicated to VersaCell.
• Test disable/enable on VersaCell is not supported.

ADVIA 1800

• Tests can be disabled at the instrument.

• Information for disabled tests on the instrument will not be transmitted to the VersaCell.
• Operator must also disable the test at the VersaCell Test Activation screen.

Centaur Systems

• Test can be disabled at the instrument. Incremental test map is sent to the VersaCell
indicating test is disabled / enabled.
• Assay can be disabled by reagent pack or entire test.
• To ensure accurate transmission of the reagent status it is recommended to disable the
entire test and not just the reagent pack.

Pg. 4
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

Dimension Systems

• Tests can not be disabled on the Instrument.

• Operator must disable the test at the VersaCell Test Activation screen.

Duplicate Test Codes

VersaCell checks the test menu for each connected instrument after each log on. If the
VersaCell detects the same test code on two different instrument types the following error will
display:

2360 –The same test name is on different instruments. See the error log for additional
test codes.

It is not recommended to run identical test codes on two connected instruments of different
types with different methodologies. The test should be disabled or remove reagent from one
of the instruments.

If the test is not disabled the VersaCell system continues processing. The test runs on either
instrument, controlled solely by the VersaCell system.

Instrument Generated Orders: Autodilution, Reflexive, Repeat Test Orders

IMMULITE Systems

• IMMULITE generated orders such as reflex, autodilution and “rerun bad” test orders are
sent to the VersaCell.
• If the tube is in the drawer it sends the test order and the tube to the instrument for
processing.
• VersaCell LIS screen displays the instrument generated test orders

ADVIA 1800

• Reflex testing feature is not available.

• Instrument generated orders, such as reruns, are not sent to the VersaCell and the
instrument will not request the tube.
• If the order is for a sample that came from the VersaCell the instrument will use the
aliquot already on board for the instrument generated order.
• The orders generated by the instrument will only be displayed on the VersaCell after the
test order results.
• Errors generated by the instrument for these samples will not be indicated on the
VersaCell.

Pg. 5
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

Dimension Systems

• Reflex tests can be configured on the Dimension. However the instrument does not
request the sample tube from the VersaCell.
• Dimension will use the aliquot already on board for the instrument generated order.
• The orders generated by the instrument will only be displayed on the VersaCell after the
test order results.
• Errors generated by the instrument for these samples will not be indicated on the
VersaCell.
• If the reflex test is configured at the LIS and order is sent to the VersaCell, it will send
the tube back to the Dimension for processing.

Centaur Systems

• Centaur generates reflexive, autodilution, and repeat test orders and sends a tube
request to the VersaCell without test order information.
• The request will appear as an orange ring around the tube on the drawer screen.
• After the tube is transferred to the instrument, the orange circle on the drawer screen
disappears and the sample tube status returns to it’s original status.
• The test order will display on the VersaCell when a result is received for the instrument
generated test order.

Tube request from CENTAUR systems for instrument generated test

orders
The tube request occurs one time for an instrument generated test.

• For example, if a sample initially results with a ‘greater than’ result, and the instrument is
configured for auto-dilution, the instrument will request the tube so it can be transferred
by the VersaCell.
• If the auto-dilution order generates a second ‘greater than’ result for the same sample, a
second tube request is not sent from the Centaur to the VersaCell.
• The tube will have to be manually loaded on the Centaur for the test order to run, or it
can be sent from the VersaCell drawer screen using the ‘send’ button.

Resend Expiration hours for the Centaur

• When the VersaCell receives a resend request for a tube from the Centaur, it will
maintain the request for 96 hours. This is the default value.
• This time frame allows the VersaCell to maintain a tube request in the event the tube
needs to be run at a later time or different day.
• It also allows the VersaCell to delete old resend requests where the tube was not placed
back on the VersaCell because they were directly loaded on the instrument.
• This default value can be changed in Configurations -> System Configurations -> FSE
Configuration:

Known issue with no resend request from the Centaur to the VersaCell

• There are times that the Centaur will not send a ‘resend request’ to the VersaCell for a
tube that has a Centaur generated order such as autodilution, reflex test or rerun.
• This occurs due to software behavior with the Centaur. When the Centaur processes
200 automation tubes it does not send tube requests to the VersaCell after the 200th
tube.
• On the VersaCell screen these samples will appear as “In Progress” for Auto-dilutions
and Reruns. For reflexes orders the tube will display as “Complete”.
• The instrument generated order remains pending on the Centaur since the tube is not
transferred.

No Resend Request from the Centaur to the VersaCell-WORK AROUND

• At this time the behavior can only be addressed by rebooting the Centaur, or running
mechanics on/off which takes about 10 minutes and resets the LAS sample counter
back to 0.
• It is recommended to perform this action prior to running for the day and before 200
samples processed is reached.
• Another option is that the LIS host can be used to generate the auto-dilution, reflex or
rerun orders, (if capable). This will prevent the need for instrument generated orders and
resend requests.
• ADVIA Centaur XP release 7.0 will address this issue.

Autodilution, Reflexive, Repeat test orders for Track systems

Track

• If an auto dilution, reflex test or repeat test is required, the VersaCell cannot request
tubes from the track.
• Tubes have to be manually loaded on the instrument.
• Reflex/auto-dilution tests on the VersaCell/Track setups can have the LIS generate the
order (if capable). This will allow the LIS to inform the track controller to route the tube
back to the VersaCell.

Add-on Orders from the LIS

IMMULITE Systems

• VersaCell supports LIS add-ons. When the VersaCell receives the add on order it will
transfer the tube and test order.
• Add-on orders for the sample are processed even if already running on the IMMULITE
system.

ADVIA 1800

• VersaCell does not support LIS add-ons while tests are running for a sample on the
instrument. A Time delay is needed by the instrument after current orders result and
before it processes any add-on orders.
• Time delay is configured on the VersaCell:

Configurations->Systems configuration->User Configuration:

Pg. 8
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

Centaur Systems

• VersaCell supports LIS add-ons. VersaCell transfers the tube and test order.
• Instrument will run add-on tests at any time even if other tests are running for the
sample.
• If the add-on test is the same test as one that is in the Centaur work list but not yet
processed, the Centaur will reject and discard the replicate test order. It will only accept
add on replicate test order if it is already in progress or the initial replicate test results.

Dimension Systems

• VersaCell supports LIS add-ons. VersaCell transfers the tube and test order. Add-ons
for the sample are processed even if already running on the instrument.
• Dimension systems consider any sample presented from the VersaCell a new sample,
and will run any test.

Unsolicited LIS Test Orders

• If the LIS sends unsolicited test orders for add on tests for a sample that has already
been processed/resulted but still present in an input/output drawer, the VersaCell will
go back and pick up a tube in an input/output drawer.

• It does not matter if the tube has already been declared to be "sample complete" (or
"transfer complete"). Upon receipt of the add-on orders, the tube status is changed
back to "WAITING", and is then processed to completion.

LIS Orders for Manually Loaded Tubes on Connected Instruments

IMMULITE Systems

• Instrument sends list of all samples onboard to the VersaCell.

• VersaCell queries LIS and sends all test orders to the instrument.

ADVIA 1800, Centaur and Dimension Systems

• Instrument must query for each individual sample by accession number and sends
sample information to the VersaCell.
• VersaCell queries LIS for each individual accession number and sends test orders to the
instrument for processing.
• If ‘Order delayed to instrument’ error for the Dimension displays on the VersaCell, it is
necessary to press Run again on the instrument.

Orders Manually Entered at the Connected Instrument for Tubes on

VersaCell

IMMULITE Systems

• Manual orders from the instrument are sent to the VersaCell when created.
• The orders can only be processed on the instrument where the order was created.

ADVIA 1800 and Centaur Systems

• The sample must be resent from the VersaCell to the instrument by using the ‘send’
button on the drawer screen.
• Manual orders will be displayed on the VersaCell screen when resulted.

Dimension Systems

• Tube can not be sent from VersaCell to Dimension for manual orders. The ‘Send’ button
is disabled on the drawer screen for Dimension samples.
• The sample must be manually loaded on the instrument.
• Manual orders will be displayed on the VersaCell when resulted.

LIS-Result Transmission

IMMULITE Systems

• Patient and control results are transmitted to VersaCell and LIS.

• Auto send configuration on the instrument will determine how results transmit from
Instrument to the VersaCell and LIS.
• ‘ERROR’ results are displayed at the VersaCell only and not sent to the LIS.
• ‘Invalid’ results are not sent to the VersaCell or LIS.
• Required flags (H, L, N < and >) are transmitted to the VersaCell and LIS.
• Result flags such as ADJ,TMP and QC are displayed at VersaCell but not transmitted to
the LIS.
• Qualitative test results can be sent by the VersaCell as either a qualitative interpretation
or as a ratio (not both).
• Qualitative interpretation results codes 0.0, 1.0, 2.0 are displayed as Non-reactive-
NR(0.0), Reactive-R(1.00) or Indeterminate-I (2.00) and related text values/flags
dependent upon qualitative result display configuration.
• Diluted results are transmitted for both onboard and manual dilutions factors. The
dilution factor is only displayed when resulted. If configured for ‘Send Dilution’ on the
VersaCell, the factor will be transmitted to the LIS with the result.
• Depending on instrument configurations, multiple results for each allergy test may be
transmitted for Concentration, Standard and Extended class.

ADVIA 1800

• Patient and control results can be transmitted to the LIS.

• Result comment messages may be transmitted to the LIS.
• VersaCell will transmit up to three flags (judgment, status or Rerun flags) for a result.
• ADVIA 1800 transmits an asterisk (*) in the VersaCell LIS error flag field as an indicator
to the operator to check custom result comments for error flags on the instrument.
• One comment message is generated for each flag to be sent.
• Manual dilution and instrument code (M) Neat, (U) Up and (D) Down for dilutions are
transmitted and supported by the VersaCell.
• Dilution information can be configured on the VersaCell to transmit to the LIS with the
result by using the ‘Send dilution’ configuration.

Centaur Systems

• Patient and control results can be transmitted to VersaCell and LIS.

• The VersaCell system sends results to include multiple result aspects (ex. DOSE,COFF,
RLU) however only one will display on the VersaCell.
• All result aspects for a test are transmitted to the LIS.
• Patient comments, result comments, and flags (< and > results, H and L) are transmitted
to the VersaCell and sent to LIS.
• If the instrument produces multiple flags for the result aspect, the multiple flags are
displayed on the VersaCell and sent to the LIS.
• Preliminary results may be viewed on the Centaur but not supported for display or
transmission to the LIS by the VersaCell.
• Instrument can be configured to send the results of the individual tests included in a ratio
calculation to the VersaCell.
• Dilution protocols and dilution ratio will be sent for a diluted sample and can be
configured on the VersaCell to transmit to the LIS with the result by using the ‘Send
dilution’ configuration.

Dimension Systems

• Patient and control results can be transmitted to the VersaCell and LIS.
• Result comments are sent to the VersaCell and LIS.
• All results for a sample are sent at the same time to the LIS. If some tests could not run
on the instrument after it was pipetted, it will be sent with an error code to the VersaCell
and display as an order error.
• Result flags such as <Assay range or >Assay range sent by the Dimension with results
are displayed on the LIS screen in the Error flag column on the VersaCell.
• Custom error codes with results are transmitted to the LIS via result comment messages
similar to the ADVIA 1800.

Pg. 11
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

• Manual dilution factor is transmitted with the result to VersaCell and LIS and is displayed
on the VersaCell LIS screens with a ‘+’ sign.
• Autodilution information is sent to the VersaCell LIS screen, and displays in the Error
flag column as a result flag of ‘Diluted’. It is displayed if no other higher priority error flag
exists for that test.

LIS- Result handling-Things to Remember

• The VersaCell will automatically transmit results in the same order that it is received
from the connected instrument. It may not transmit in the order in which the test
completed unless instruments send in that order.
• Un-tagging test result records on the VersaCell LIS screen marked for automatic
transmission to the LIS can change the sequence in which the VersaCell system sends
results to the LIS.
• Manually un-tagging records can affect operator interpretation of results at the LIS due
to the order in which the results may appear. For example, the VersaCell system may
not transmit initial results prior to transmitting rerun results for the same test.
• To ensure transmission of comments associated with results or transmission of patient
comments to the LIS, option must be configured in the VersaCell LIS configuration
screen.
• For ADVIA CentraLink connections, the Send Action Code/Report Type option can be
selected to transmit action codes and report type codes to the LIS with results.
• The VersaCell LIS interface can identify control samples with action code of “Q” for any
instrument type. The action code is field 12 of the ASTM order record when transmitted.
• Above configurations can be selected in Configurations-> Systems configuration-> LIS:

LIS-Intermediate Frames on the VersaCell

The VersaCell does not support intermediate frames, which is an additional frame ending in
ETB for an order record that is greater than 240 bytes.

• Misinterpretation of the order records can occur when the VersaCell system is parsing
the Intermediate frames, which can lead to unprocessed tests, or missing information
such as important specimen type used by the ADVIA 1800.
• Starting with software version 3.5b and above, errors will occur if the VersaCell receives
intermediate frames coming from the LIS. The order will not be saved.

Pg. 12
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

6011 – Intermediate frames from the LIS are not supported. Orders for the accession
number were not saved. Please contact your local technical support provider.

• To prevent the use of intermediate frames, the VersaCell software can now accept order
records as large as 2048 bytes.
• LIS can also send multiple order records for the same accession number to prevent
intermediate frames.
• In the event that the LIS host requires the use of intermediate frames, this may be
temporarily configured on the VersaCell until the LIS is addressed. Configurations ->
System Configurations -> FSE Configuration:

• If the configuration is selected and intermediate frames are received from the LIS the
following error will occur for each intermediate frame received and only part of the order
is saved.

6012 – Intermediate frames from the LIS are not supported. Some orders for the
accession number were not saved. Verify resulted orders for correct test name,
dilution, and specimen type. Please contact technical support.

Patient ID for Centaur

• The VersaCell supports a patient ID up to 20 characters in an order record.

• Centaur XP will not support a Patient ID that uses more than 11 characters.
• If a patient ID is received that is greater than 11 characters, pre-existing behavior is for
the Centaur to truncate the Patient ID value when sending the result record.
• The default behavior is for the VersaCell to send the truncated Patient ID to the LIS
with the result as it receives it from the Centaur.
• To prevent the default behavior of truncating the patient ID information by the Centaur,
a VersaCell configuration will allow this field to be blanked before sending the order to
the instrument. Configurations -> System Configurations -> FSE Configuration:

Pg. 13
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

Patient Name or Patient ID for Dimension

• The Dimension offers a single (optional) field which can be used to identify a sample.
• A configuration present on VersaCell allows assignment of either the patient ID or
patient name to this field.
• If control results will be sent by the Dimension to the VersaCell, the field needs to be
configured to send Patient Name, since control results will have patient ID that are > 20
characters.
• If the VersaCell is configured to use Patient ID for patient identification it will reject
results received from the Dimension with a Patient ID > 20 characters (example:
manually loaded samples)
• Results are not saved, and error message is reported to the operator. Order Error is not
generated in this case.
• If the LIS sends an order with patient ID >20 characters an error is reported and order is
not saved.
• Configuration found under Configurations -> System Configurations -> FSE
Configuration:

Specimen Type

• VersaCell is capable of supporting the specimen type in either Field 14 or Field 16 of the
LIS order record.
• Fields are configurable in the VersaCell so that the software can validate specimen type
information.
• It is important that the correct field is configured based on how the LIS transmits
specimen type information.
• This ensures the proper field of the order record is validated by the VersaCell when the
order is received from the LIS.
• Specimen Type field under Configurations -> System Configurations -> FSE
Configuration:

Pg. 14
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

Centaur Systems

• Does not support Specimen type field. If the LIS sends specimen type it will only display
on the VersaCell FIND screen.
• When the VersaCell sends orders to the Centaur, the Centaur sends the result back to
the VersaCell without specimen type information and the FIND screen will have a blank
specimen type field.

Dimension Systems

• Unexpected Specimen type, multiple Specimen types for a single sample or missing
Specimen Type received from the LIS for the Dimension will generate an Order Error
that must be corrected at the LIS.

ADVIA 1800 Systems

• Only accepts Specimen types of “1”-Serum and “2”-Urine, any other specimen type, (3-
CSF or 4-Plasma), is rejected by the ADVIA 1800.
• If LIS sends an invalid specimen type or a blank specimen type an Order Error is
displayed for the sample and tube is not transferred.
• Current VersaCell software is defaulted to change a blank specimen type to “1”-SERUM
when received by the LIS for the ADVIA 1800.
• With software version 3.6a this default behavior will change and the order with blank
specimen type is rejected and Order Error will occur.
• To maintain the current default functionality after installation of 3.6a, and when
connected to the ADVIA 1800, the behavior can be configured under Configurations ->
System Configurations -> FSE Configuration:

‘Send dilution’ Configuration

• The VersaCell contains a configuration that enables the dilution factor for a result to be
transmitted to the LIS.
• When selected the configuration allows the dilution factor for all connected instruments
to transmit.
• Configuration is found under Configuration-> System Configuration->LIS configuration:

Pg. 15
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

ADVIA 1800 Systems

There is an instance where the VersaCell will modify information dependent on the
configurations set on the VersaCell, such as in the case with ADVIA 1800.

• ADVIA 1800 sends results with dilution information of M, U or D.

• When the ‘Send Dilution’ configuration on the VersaCell is selected, the VersaCell will
add the word NEAT for M, UP for U or DOWN for D when it transmits the diluted result
to the LIS.
• If the Lab LIS system can not support the added data string, deselect this configuration
on the VersaCell so that dilution information is not sent to the LIS for diluted results
generated by the ADVIA 1800.
• The dilution information will also not be transmitted to the LIS for any connected
instrument.

Order Errors

Order errors occur on the ADVIA 1800, Centaur systems and Dimension systems when a
sample can not complete on the instrument or a result was not received in the expected time
frame.

• The order errors can be due to an instrument hardware, reagent or consumable issue or
due to unsupported LIS information.
• The VersaCell can not determine if order errors have been addressed on the connected
instruments.
• The IMMULITE Systems do not generate Order Errors. If there is an issue running a test
order, the order is sent back to the VersaCell as ‘re-run’ bad test.
• The Order Error screen is used to notify the VersaCell the issue has been addressed by
manually selecting ‘Resend’ which sends the order back to the instrument for
processing.
• Order errors do not occur for tubes that are manually loaded on the instruments as the
VersaCell can not keep track of the tube status. However an error message will appear
on the VersaCell error log stating the result was not received due to the an ERROR
status on the instrument

Order Errors - Common Causes on ADVIA 1800

• Result Timeout -results not received from ADVIA 1800 in the expected timeframe will
cause an Order Error.
• This timeframe can be configured on the VersaCell configurations screen in the ADVIA
1800 Result Timeout field. Currently the default value is 30 minutes.
• Configuration found under Configuration->Systems configuration-> User Configuration:

Pg. 16
VersaCell and Connected Instruments: Behavior and Troubleshooting SIEMENS

Source: GPS IMMULITE / VersaCell Doc ID: SKB0008592 Published: 9/29/2011 Doc Version: 1.0

• Insufficient Sample- the instrument sets a flag indicating there was not enough sample
to pipette.
• Sample Rejected- the instrument is rejected because there was no reagent available for
the test.
• Failed to Result -instrument returned 1 or more un-resulted test orders for a sample
tube.
• Incorrect Patient sex will result in a permanent order error.

Order Errors - Sample Error Behavior on ADVIA 1800

• If an ADVIA 1800 tube is marked with sample error on the VersaCell, the operator has to
remove the tube to fix the problem. When the tube is reloaded on the VersaCell in a
different tube position, it is marked as an order error.
• The order error for the sample has to be resolved by going to the order errors screen to
resend the tube to the interface wheel.
• This is different for the other connected instruments. Once a sample error is corrected
and tube placed in different tube position, the VersaCell automatically resends the tube
for processing (the tubes is not marked as an order error)

Order Error – Common Causes on Centaur Systems

• Reagent Error -instrument rejected sample because there was a problem with a reagent,
ancillary reagent, or diluent.
• If reagent is not available, order errors will occur until the instrument marks the reagent
as ‘No inventory’.
• Control Bracket Error- the instrument rejected the sample because there was a problem
with the control bracket.
• Instrument Error –rejected the sample because there was an instrument problem.
• Order Pipette-instrument rejected the sample because there was a problem with the
order record.
• Test Inactive-instrument rejected the sample because the test in the order record is
inactive.
• Unsupported dilution factors are sent to VersaCell as an order error.
• Expired calibration
o Instrument does not notify the VersaCell of expired calibrations.
o VersaCell continues to send sample tubes and the instrument will reject the
sample.
o Tube is returned to the drawer and displayed with an order error.

• Barcodes
o Centaur does not support barcodes with more than 13 characters.
o If the VersaCell receives an accession number that exceeds 13 characters, an
order error is generated. Needs to be addressed at the LIS.

Order Errors- Common Causes on Dimension Systems

• Arithmetic error-An arithmetic error occurred on a test order. Resend order to the
instrument.
• Never calibrated-An error occurred on a test order because the assay was not
calibrated. Calibrate the assay and resend the test order to the instrument.
• No reagent-An error occurred on a test order because there was no reagent. Add
reagent and resend the test order to the instrument.
• Aborted test-The instrument rejected the transmitted order.
• Processing error- A processing error occurred on a test order. Resend the test order to
the instrument.
• Software error- A software error occurred on a test order. Resend the test order to the
instrument.
• Accession number field is greater than 12 characters.
• Invalid specimen types will generate an order error. Order error is applied to all test
orders associated with the sample since it cannot determine which test caused the error.
• The following unexpected information in the LIS order record will be rejected at the
VersaCell and will generate an error message.

o Unexpected combinations of action code

o Unexpected priority
o Unexpected specimen type

• The results are NOT saved. Order Error is NOT generated in this case.

Running out of Dimension Test Vessels when connected to the VersaCell

• If the Dimension system runs out of test vessels during a run the VersaCell will continue
sending tubes to the Dimension.
• The Dimension will continue to aspirate aliquots for those tubes.
• For the tests to process, it is necessary to select the Reset button on the Dimension
after filling the test vessel hopper to ensure the analyzer knows the hopper is full.
• If the Reset button is not selected the aliquots will time out after a specified time period
indicated by the Dimension. The test will not be processed and will be seen on the
VersaCell as an order error.

‘In Progress’ Status for Incomplete Tests- Things to Remember

• In some cases, a sample that is not resulted on the instrument due to errors, will still
appear as “In Progress” on the VersaCell screen.
• The VersaCell has no knowledge that the tube has not completed due to instrument
issues; therefore, the status does not change on the VersaCell.
• When the issue is addressed on the instrument, the tube may not be automatically
transferred to the Instrument by the VersaCell to be processed.
• For example, if inventory becomes unavailable for a test that has already been
transferred to the instrument it will appear as ‘In Progress’ on the VersaCell but not run
on the instrument.
• The tube can be manually resent from the VersaCell drawer screen once the reagent
issue is addressed on the instrument for the pending instrument order.
• There are cases where the operator will have to put the tube directly on the Instrument
for processing.
