Imagine you are staying with a friend in another country. Write a postcard to
your parents. Include the following information:
 what the place and the weather are like
 what the house and the family are like
 what you do every day
 what is different from your country

Write an e-mail to a friend about your week. Include the following information:
 what you did at school/college

 what you did after school and in the evenings

You are organising a family meal at a restaurant to celebrate your grandma’s 70. Write
a letter to the restaurant, including the following information:
 how many people
 what is the occasion
 the date and time
 check availability
 check if they have a set menu

Imagine you are on holiday in a big city. Write an e-mail to a friend. Write about these
things:
 where you are
 what the weather’s like
 what you have already done
 what you haven’t done yet

PRE- INTERMEDIATE
Imagine you have applied to go on one of the TV shows advertised. Write an e-mail to
a friend telling him/her about it. Include the following information:

 where you saw the advertisement

 why you want to go on the show

 what you wrote on the application form

 what is good and bad about the film
 other aspects of the film: acting, screenplay, music, special effects, location,
etc.

WRITING: Imagine there is a special festival in your town. Write a note to a friend who
lives in another town and invite him/her to come to the festival with you. Write 50-70
words. Include this information:
 describe the festival
 invite your friend
 say how you will spend the day

Write an essay about a serious problem in your country or in the world. Write 130-150
words. Include this information:
 describe the problem and why it is serious
 say why you care about the problem
 say what will happen if we don’t take action
 say what individuals can do to help
 say what governments should do to help

Think about a crime film you have seen. Write the story of what happened in
the film. Write 130-150 words. Include this information:
 what the crime was
 who the criminals were
 what they did
 who tried to catch them
 what happened in the end
Write a letter to your English friend to tell him/her about ‘community police’ in
your area. Say what they do and whether you think it’s a good idea or not and
why.

Think about a book you have read recently. Write a review of the book (130-150
words). Include this information:
 title, author and type of book
 where it is set, who the main characters are, what the story is
 What is your opinion of it? Why?

INTERMEDIATE

Imagine you are going to spend a month in England on an English-language course.


Write a letter to the family you are going to stay with introducing yourself. Use the
writing guide to help you.

Paragraph 1: introduction, general personal details

Write an informal letter to a penfriend in England. Include the following information:


 an appropriate greeting
 an apology for not writing sooner
 news about yourself
 news about friends and/or family
 Ask questions about your friend
 an appropriate closing

Imagine you are having a disastrous holiday. Write a postcard to a friend back
home. Tell him/her about:
 the journey
 the weather
 the accommodation

Imagine you are planning to buy a new bike. You see one advertised in a magazine.
Write a letter to the shop asking for more information. Include the following
information and use indirect questions:

 say where you saw the advert, and why you are writing
 explain what you need the bike for
 ask your most important question

Write an essay on the topic ‘What is the purpose of art?’ Include the following
information:
 an introduction to the topic
 2-3 arguments with supporting examples
 an appropriate conclusion
