QUIZ 1 Introduction to Kinematics of Machines

 The subject machine elements revolve around pure mechanism instead of

constructive mechanism.
 A machine is a series of mechanism but mechanism is not necessarily a
machine.
 Machine parts needs to be rigid bodies during operation.
 Transmission of power in a mechanism can be done directly and indirectly.
 To compel a body to move in a definite path, it must be paired with another
whose shape is dependent on the nature of relative motion of the two bodies.
 The selection of materials for a machine falls under the discipline of constructive
mechanism.
 A machine is an assemblage of parts interposed between the source of power
and the work, for the purpose of adapting the one to the other.
 Cranks, levers, bearings, journals, shafts, crosshead, cams, gears, screws,
ropes, chains, belts, pulleys, wheels, keys, collars, cylinders, pistons, connecting rods
and piston rods are forms of the parts of a machine.
 A frame is an example of a structure of a machine.
 The combination of a crank and conecting rod with guides and frame is a
mechanism.
 A frame may be either fixed to the earth or moving relative to the earth,
 Intermediate connectors may be rigid, flexible or fluid.
 If an intermediate connector is rigid, it is called a link.
 Inversion of pair is the exchange of fixedness of an element with its partner.
 The 6th machine mentioned in the video "Incredible machine" is a street cleaner.
