Biomass Calculation Explanation
Biomass Calculation Explanation
• The website provides forest canopy cover based on satellite image analysis on an
annual basis with baseline data collected on tree cover, biomass and carbon stocks
made in the year 2000 and 2010 (this is referred to in the excel data sheet as
extent_2000 and extent_2010).
• Biomass data is based on tree canopy cover; thus, each region has a
‘avg_biomass_per_ha_Mg’ which is the average biomass per hectare. This value changes
according to the different threshold.
• To determine the Biomass loss per year, simply multiply the ‘avg_biomass_per_ha_Mg’
threshold with the corresponding Tree canopy loss.
Example: 15% Threshold Total canopy loss for the year 2002 under ‘Country tree cover loss’ tab in
the data sheet is 706 hectares.
The corresponding 15% threshold ‘avg_biomass_per_ha_Mg’ value under ‘Country biomass loss’
tab in the data sheet is 214
