Before we proceed to our lesson for today, we will be answering these three questions: First, what is an argumentative
essay? Second, what are the parts of an argumentative essay? And third, how do we write argumentative essay?

“Are you ready to learn? Let’s dig in”.

Argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires you to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate
evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.

The argument presents in an essay must first be specific, reasonable, have details and sound evidence.

The goals of argumentative essays are to provide the reader with point-counterpoint perspectives on topics and issues
that may not be fully resolved in the existing literature or in society at large.

“Let us know the parts of an argumentative essay and how to write them”.

“First the introduction: The thesis statement”.

It is the most important element of any argument essay. The thesis statement summarizes, usually in one sentence at
the end of the introductory paragraph, the essence of your argument.

A thesis statement should be clear and direct, arguing for a specific action or point of view and presenting clear reasons
to support that argument.

“The introduction may start off with a brief hook that gets the reader’s attention and give readers enough information
to understand the topic.

This also serves to outline the thesis statement which will outline the main ideas.

Second is the development: Supporting Details


The developmental paragraphs should be discussed in a logical sequence. The developmental paragraphs must not jump
from one topic to another.

In writing your body, make it a point to provide evidence in support of the thesis statement presented.
Hence, it entails intensive research, gather as many reliable sources to make your discussion of the pros and cons
extensive.

“Use interviews, print sources and news articles to establish a more authoritative presentation of arguments.
Acknowledge sources and use in-text citations. Avoid emotional language. Know the difference between logic and
emotion. Most importantly, don’t fabricate evidence”.

Last but not the least is the conclusion.


The final paragraph summarizes the essay and restates the thesis and the reasons a reader should believe or do what
the writer suggests. New information is not included in the last paragraph.

Writers often end an argumentative essay with a personal comment, such as a call for action, a prediction or a question
to make readers think and draw their own conclusions. This paragraph should cause the reader to seriously consider the
writer's point of view.

“To make it simple, in an argumentative essay, it is expected for the topic to be articulated in a thesis statement, and for
the supporting details or evidence to follow the developmental paragraphs. Always remember these crucial parts in
writing an argumentative essay. Again, do not fabricate pieces of evidence.

“Now that we had discussed about argumentative essay, this call for a short activity. I want you to research and create
your own argumentative essay that composed at least 300 words. You can choose whatever topic you want. Write in on
a piece paper and indicate also the sources in APA format at the bottom part of it. You will be graded with the use of
scoring rubrics”.

Scoring rubric formally define as a coherent set of criteria for students’ work, it distinguishes between levels of student
performance on a given activity.

Rubrics can be broken down into three parts.


First the performance criteria, these are the factors being measured and are commonly represented as the rows of a
rubric. Second is the performance levels, it represents the gradation of performance and typically take form of the
column headings of rubric. The performance levels can be numeric like 1,2,3 and 4 or textual like poor, acceptable, good
and excellent. And lastly, the performance level descriptors. It articulates the observable characteristics of performance
for the intersection of a given criteria and performance level and comprise the cells of a rubric.
