TYPICAL SITUATION - CAMPING ADVENTURES 1. LISTEN AND

REPEAT
A: Hey, Daniel, are you awake yet? Get out of the van and look at this. You won't be
disappointed.
B: Esther, have you any idea what the time is? I'm pretty relaxed where I am, thank you
and I don't want to get out of bed yet.
A: I am always astonished at how long it takes you to get ready in the morning. Come
on and get up!
B: What's the temperature out there? It is so freezing inside the van.
A: I don't know exactly. There must still be a slight chill because I can see my breath in
the air, but it can't be below freezing like it was last night. The sun is out and
everything is fine.
B: Alright then. Phew, it's hard to take my ear off the pillow. I don't know why I am so
sleepy.
A: That's because of the fresh air. Do you want some toast? I'm making some now and
I'm going to serve breakfast in a minute.
B: I'd love some, thank you. I'm getting up now to give you a hand.
A: Great, I could do with some help. Can you make the coffee?
B: Sure.
A: Only not as strong as yesterday, please.
B: That was my mistake. I didn't calculate the right amount of coffee exactly. How
much do I need to use?
A: Don't ask me! How should I know? Can you look at the packet? It's not rocket
science.
B: Alright. I'm looking at the instructions now. How much is three tablespoons with
this? I don't think it's the same because the one I have is a bit smaller.
A: Is it a teaspoon?
B: I suppose it is.
A: There are about 3 teaspoons to a tablespoon.
B: Well, how many teaspoons is that then?

Camping adventures 1 - Typical situation

A: Come on. That's basic arithmetic or do you need to use a calculator and pencil? That
way you'll have no excuse for making the same mistake again.
B: Hey Esther, that's enough! Have you finished speaking to me like that or are you
trying to make me feel embarrassed? I'm here with you doing my best to help, aren't
I? Wherever that is.
A: Daniel, you know where it is, we're halfway between Edinburgh and Fort William on
the moors of Glencoe. Sorry for speaking to you like that. I just want you to relax
and think a bit more sometimes. You know it's not too difficult, especially here.
B: I want to relax. You know that as much as I do. Sometimes I think if you can
recognize I'm not as competitive as you, things would be easier. I know I make some
embarrassing mistakes.
A: Fine, Daniel. I see what you are trying to tell me.
B: Good, because at the minimum I want you to see that and accept it. I don't want to
think I'm failing at everything all the time.
A: Please, I know sometimes I overdo it. Whenever you think I'm being too much, just
tell me. I don't want to fight with you.
B: I know you don't and neither do I. Not thinking too much about everything's my
preference, OK? For me life is not as complex as it is for you.
A: Yes, you know I don't mind. I love it. Please don't feel disappointed with me.
B: Thanks. Wow, it is pretty, isn't it? Just look at that. Are they volcanoes?
A: They look like it, but they're mountains. They're very old so the top is not pointed,
they're round like volcanoes are. They're also smaller than the mountains where we
come from, but because they are covered with snow, I think they look taller. What do
you think?
B: I suppose so. Yes, they do look a different height than they really are. Do you want
some of this thick marmalade for your toast?
A: No thanks. I'm fine with this toast unless you have something spicy.
B: We don't have anything spicy. I would swap this toast for a nice spicy curry like the
one we had in York two nights ago. I'm so hungry I could eat that cow in the field
over there.
A: Me too. I have eaten four slices of toast already.
B: How about your coffee? Do you want it now?
A: Yes, please, I'd love some now. Thanks.
B: Here you are.
A: Thanks, Daniel. Mmm! That tastes great.
