Part 1: Introducing the Contemporary Business World
Business Name
Stantec Inc.

Description of Business
Stantec will act as consultants for their clients in a wide variety of fields including, but not
limited to environmental, engineering, community development, and water services.

Form of Business Ownership


Stantec will be a corporation. A corporation was chosen because there is no personal liability. If
the company fails as planned, the owners will not be expected to pay any company debts from
personal sources. Another benefit is the life of the business has the potential to be longer than the
lifetime of the owners. As long as the business is in operation, there will be income from stocks
and shares.

Ideal Customer
Stantec’s customers will primarily be organizations and government agencies. However, there
may be times where private residences require Stantec’s services.

Our Advantages
Customers will choose to use Stantec’s services because of our commitment to our customers,
the environment. Stantec will provide high quality products and services and will exceed our
client’s expectations.

Ethical Issues
1. All owners, employees, and contractors of Stantec must not act in any situation which
creates or has the potential to create a conflict of interest.
2. All information obtained while conducting business with Stantec is deemed confidential
and should be treated as such under all applicable laws.
3. No unethical payments will be made to or accepted by any person or organization under
any applicable laws.

Social Responsibility
Stantec will ensure that they are socially responsible by implementing a Corporate Social
Responsibility Plan. This will outline what Stantec will do to be responsible to the environment,
customers, and employees.

To be responsible to the environment, Stantec will develop company policies to be mindful to the
environment. This includes composting and recycling, leaving the natural environment in the
same way it was found while conducting work, not wasting natural resources such as water, and
reducing the amount Stantec contributes to the air pollution by not idling vehicles/machines and
reducing the amount of inorganic substances into the air.

For responsibility towards our customers, Stantec is committed to fair pricing, ethical
advertising, and ensure customers know and exercise their rights. This will ensure our clients
stay loyal to Stantec. Stantec and its representatives will always provide honest and upfront
pricing that is in line with industry standards. Any advertising that Stantec does, will be direct
and honest. Stantec will not get involved, by way of advertising or any other form, with
conflicting issues such as political views or religious beliefs. We will ensure that our customers
know their rights and exercise them whenever they deem it appropriate. This includes, but is not
limited to, all levels of legislation, and association bylaws.

With regards to being responsible to employees, Stantec will ensure that everyone is happy,
taken care of, and knows that they can voice their opinions at any time. Employee morale at
Stantec is very important for our success and ensuring our Corporate Social Responsibility
Policies are being implemented. A positive work environment will make Stantec an attractive
employer and ensure high employee retention.

It is important that all parts of the Corporate Social Responsibility policy are implemented and
followed by everyone at Stantec. With one piece of this plan not being followed, it will make the
entire thing ineffective. Stantec management will ensure that the Corporate Social Responsibility
plan is implemented to its full potential.

Part 2(a): The Business of Managing

Mission Statement
We are committed to creating and forming communities and forging their future potential.

Business Goals
First Year Business Goals
1. Secure ten unique customers within the first month of business through advertising and
networking.
2. Develop a solid, experienced team of staff to meet all needs of the business as identified
in the organization chart.
3. Create a presence on appropriate social media channels and have consistent activity and
followers on all channels.
Intermediate-Term Business Goal
1. Have a 20% market share within the first 5 years of starting operations.
Long-Term Business Goal
1. Expand to 10 business locations throughout North America in the next 15 years

SWOT Analysis
Strengths Using size and strength of business in Canada to grow business
outside of Canada; Stable financials throughout the company, A
business model that will be successful to continued growth in
Canada and internationally.
Weaknesses The initial size of international business for Stantec is minimal,
Marketing of the company and its products is very minimal and
lacking, Stantec specializes and is a leader in their primary industry
but has difficulty with other products and services when
opportunities may become available.
Opportunities New technology if Stantec optimizes on it, especially if they are
one of the first companies in the industry utilizing it, Opening a
new market for sales with online audiences, As new trends develop,
if Stantec’s business model allows it, the company should be able
to broaden their market.
Threats If there is a major technological advance and a competitor takes
advantage of it before Stantec, The introduction of new competitors
in the industry, The rising price of materials required to work in the
industry if revenues cannot support it.

Management
Stantec management will include top management such as the President and CEO followed by
top management and supervisors of each of the practice areas as indicated in the Organization
Chart below.

Part 2(b): The Business of Managing

Corporate Culture
The corporate culture at Stantec will be a combination of fun and professional. We want
everyone working at Stantec to enjoy being here. Stantec management will, on a regular basis,
meet with staff to make sure that the culture and workplace environment is positive and moving
forward for meeting the company’s corporate goals. Management will keep in mind that the
company’s corporate culture will need to consistently be reviewed and potentially will have to
change based on the goals of the company.

On a professional level, there will be industry, government, and company standards that
everyone will need to adhere to. Everybody will expected to have a high quality performance
level and work together. Policies will be established on various levels such as interacting with
the public, clients, and media as well as productivity, attendance, and teamwork. On a more
relaxed and fun level, Stantec will ensure that staff are enjoying their careers and want to be
here. A social committee will be established and there will be company functions, staff will be
recognized for their achievements, and a work life balance flexibility will be established
throughout the company.
Leadership Philosophy
There will be an open-door policy with management. Anyone is always welcome to speak with
any manager about any issue, company related or personal, that they have. Stantec will have a
Human Resources department. Management will establish goals for the near future as well as
long term goals. Stantec won’t have “bosses”. They will have leaders. These people will be those
that anyone can go to for guidance, training, and questions. These individuals will pave the path
for the company’s success and help with the success of each individual. Stantec management
will know that if something does not go accordingly, they will need to adjust plans and goals to
Stantec’s best interests.

Job Descriptions
The job description for the receptionist is: 1) to greet clients, staff, vendors, and other guests in a
friendly and professional manner; 2) Manage a multi phone line system and screen calls
accordingly; 3) Handle the scheduling of conference rooms, flights, and hotels for business
meetings; 4) Maintain the cleanliness of the reception area, lunch room, and conference rooms;
5) Handle incoming and outgoing mail; 6) Ordering office supplies and 7) Go on errands for staff
as required.

Job Specifications
Job Title #1: Receptionist
Needed Skills/Credentials/Qualification for Job: A high school diploma (or
equivalent is required) however a post secondary diploma in business is preferred.; Three years’
experience in an office support and customer service environment; Advanced proficiency with
Windows 10, and Microsoft Office applications including but not limited to Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Outlook.; Intermediate proficiency in Cloud applications, and Google
applications.; Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.; Excellent customer service skills.; A positive and
energetic attitude with the willingness to learn new things.

Training Employees
Stantec will have a variety of training for staff and management. Everyone will be required to do
basic safety training as well as training of the programs that Stantec uses. Advanced training and
skill specific training will be given to individuals as they need it.

Most of the training that is required of individuals at Stantec will be off-the-job training. This
includes being at the office as well as third party locations. However, on-the-job training will be
used for situation specific tasks or for situations where someone does not have a lot of
experience, such as a co-op student.

Compensation
Stantec management and staff will be paid with a salary as opposed to an hourly wage and will
be paid on a bi-monthly basis (the 15th and last days of the month). This form of compensation
has been chosen for multiple reasons. The main reasons include salary jobs typically offer more
benefits such as short and long term disability, accumulation of vacation and sick time, as well as
salaries offer more financial stability knowing that you will have the same paycheque every time.

Stantec will offer industry competitive salaries. Specific salaries, however, will be based upon
the combination and experience that an individual has.
Incentives
It is recognized that everyone at Stantec is valuable and they will be compensated competitively
and be offered various incentives. Plans such as employment insurance, a Canada Pension Plan
and workers’ compensation are required. However, there are many forms of incentives and
benefits that are optional that Stantec will utilize for both management and staff.

Non-mandated benefits and incentives that Stantec will provide to full-time salaried employees
include bonuses based on the company’s success and individual performance throughout the
year, a health and fitness credit which allows each individual to spend a standard preset amount
(same amount for everyone in the company) on expenses related to personal health and fitness,
various types of paid time off (sick leave, and bereavement leave), education credits for
themselves (which is different then required training), and either paid parking or a discounted
public transit pass.

Part 3: Managing Operations and Information

IT Resources
For software, each workstation will have Windows 10, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Skype
for Business, and Deltek Vison. Vision is used for maintaining opportunities, projects,
individual’s time sheets and expense reports, accounting, and human resources and payroll
related tasks. There will also be industry specific programs for those that require it.

Customer Services
Deltek Vision will be the primary IT system used to keep track of potential and current
customers. The program has areas for clients, projects, and opportunities. These areas within
Vision are linked together and standard and custom-made reports can be created for the needs of
any user. Stored information for clients in Vision includes contact information, what the projects
and opportunities have been for that client, pay agreement, and copies of documents can be
uploaded and linked to the client such as signed contracts. All Stantec users will have Vision but
their access will be based on their role in the company.

Cost of Doing Business


The expenses for doing business in the below chart are estimates of what costs for the first year
will be. It is recognized that as Stantec grows and expands, there will be more expenses.
Financial statements are something that will need to be reviewed and adjusted as necessary.

Expected Revenue
Stantec will not be selling products but rather services. The cost will be based on the amount of
tools and materials used as well as personnel utilized. This is not including any disbursements.
An example of a rate table is as follows:

Each role as identified in the organizational chart could have one of the following hourly rates
based on the individual’s education and experience. These hourly rates are what is billed to
clients not what the individual’s pays are.
