Online Assessment|Final Exam – Guidelines

When and where will I take my online technical assessment?

• According to the timetable advertised, the online assessment will take place on:
8th June 2021 from 09:30 (You will have a 24-hour window within which the submission
point will become open to answer and submit the paper)

• Please check your timetable to confirm this information and times.

What is the structure of the online assessment?

• The online technical assessment paper will be composed of two sections. You will
have to answer all questions. Both questions carry equal weight.

• There are sample papers provided on Blackboard. You can use it as a reference point.

How to prepare for the online assessment?

I would recommend that you (in order of importance):

1. Study the handouts and the textbook very well. (The handouts highlight the most
important points, but you need to use the textbook too to cover the topics fully).
2. Understand and revise class exercises and solutions – see session recordings.
3. Understand and revise workshop material and solutions.

If you feel this is not enough. You may also:

4. Use the revision exercises at the end of each chapter of the textbook;
5. Use past-papers, but with a warning: the more you go back in time, the more questions will
appear different from the current format of the online technical assessment. Consult the links
to past papers.

What to do if you are ill on the day of the online technical assessment?
• You must contact the Medical Centre and make sure you obtain evidence to justify your
absence.

• You must inform the LTS Hub of your condition as soon as possible after contacting the
Medical Centre.

Further suggestions:

• I highly recommend that you read the entire online technical assessment paper from top
to bottom, and then carefully answer two questions. You might find that some questions
are relatively longer to read. Please bear in mind that this will help in providing accurate
answers that reflect a proper understanding of the question(s) asked.

• I would not take the chance to selectively study parts of the syllabus. The questions will
cover the whole material taught on this module. One question might cover more than one
topic!

• Again, read each question carefully prior to answering. Some of the findings derived in
the first parts of the question may be useful to address the second part of the question.
Make sure you organise your answers. This can help you to avoid wasting time repeating
reasoning and explanations already provided.

• If you cannot answer one of the points of a question, do try to solve the subsequent
points. Most of the questions are engineered so that you can gain marks all along the
way! (For instance, if you cannot answer “point (b)”, go on to address “point (c)” and
“point (d)” nevertheless).

• Make sure that you answer the question that was asked, and not the question you wish
you were asked. Do not add irrelevant observations. If you do so, your marker will think
you are just waffling, trying to hide the fact you do not know how to properly answer the
question asked. This will not give you any credit and will simply annoy your marker.

• Make every effort to write with a legible handwriting if writing by hand and employ
proper (double) spacing and font (Times or Verdana 12) if typing. Sketch clear diagrams
and equations (see above links for tips on this). Quote variables on the XY axis of your
diagrams. Define notations when opportune. Do not cram a lot of material in a very little
space: it gets very hard to read!

• Most of the times you will be asked to provide an explanation, more than a description, of
the concepts covered in your question. When you study, please make sure you
understand how and why different variables/outcomes are interrelated. This online
assessment is going to assess your understanding, more than your memory skills -
especially given the open book nature. You must show that you have mastered the
material. Knowing the underlying assumptions of the theories/schools of thoughts by
heart will not be enough – you need to understand the intuition.

• Further to the point above: please refrain from copying and pasting materials from any
online source, module handouts, textbooks - or any other material for that matter.
Plagiarism is a serious offence at UEA and the expectation here is for you to provide
explanations in your own reasoned words.
• Please have in mind that computational and graphical mistakes will be penalised, but
conceptual mistakes will be penalised even harder. Always make sure that your economic
reasoning and intuitions are sound and clear.

• Please be reminded that the online assessment will cover the material taught during the
whole semester!
