The Phoenix Multisensor Downhole Tool (MDT) is installed on the base of the downhole ESP
motor using the ESP cable as means of communication and power. The MDT provides pump
and reservoir data to give the operator information to control the ESP thus increasing reliability
and maximising the operation of the ESP.
This section of the manual details the various versions of MDT available, detailing the
parameters measured by each variant of the tool. A detailed installation and testing description
and system overview is included, along with a brief fault finding guide.

The MultiSensor measures pump intake pressure, motor temperature, intake temperature, vibration and
current leakage of the ESP electrical system. It is also capable of measuring pump discharge pressure,
motor winding temperature and flow rate. All transducers are housed inside the MultiSensor body.
Discharge pressure is measured by physically communicating the pressure at the pump discharge
through a 1/4” hydraulic line and flow using a trubine meter above the pump discharge.
All communication to surface is achieved through the connection to the motor windings, and
consequently, the ESP cable. The MultiSensor is connected to the neutral point of the lower ESP motor.
This is either directly to an I-wire connected to the motor windings or by use of a bus bar adapter. In
both cases a boot connector is used to connect to the MultiSensor’s electrical feedthrough.
2. Specification.
2.1. Housing
The MultiSensor consists of a 10,000 psi pressure housing containing the transducers and electronics.
Three housings are used, one including a cut away for the flow meter connector.

2.3. Connection
Connection to the motor is achieved by using an electrical neutral point with an I-wire attached.
I-WIRE
An adapter is available for use with motors without an electrical neutral point or I-wire. The adapter
provides a connection to the 3 phases of the motor with a bus bar star point and an attached I-wire.

Connection to the gauge is by an electrical feedthrough in the bulkhead of the tool. A boot connector is
fitted to the I-wire and plugged onto the feedthrough. Also contained in the bulkhead are two
feedthroughs for the motor winding thermocouple connection.

3. Te s t i n g o f t h e M u l t i S e n s o r
Prior to installation of the MultiSensor the housing should be checked for physical damage and the
MultiSensor function tested and Meggered. The flange for connection to the motor ( or adapter ) is
protected with a shipping cap held in place by six 16mm bolts. The bolts are retained in the housing and
are used to connect to the motor flange. There are two 233 ‘O’ ring seals (Phoenix Part No. P020-0233)
on the MultiSensor flange which should be renewed when connecting to the motor.
Care should be taken when removing the transit cap not to damage
the feedthrough in the bulkhead.
The feedthrough is protected by a rubber boot. Ensure the feedthrough connector is not damaged by
removing the boot and inspecting the pin. The feedthrough should be tested electrically using a Megger™.
The MultiSensor can be tested up to 5kV.

EARTH when a MultiSensor is attached.
A function test should be performed on the MultiSensor before connection to the motor. A surface panel
should be connected to the MultiSensor using a test lead with a boot connector attached to the
feedthrough.

The lower transit cap of the ESP motor should be removed and the I-wire located. If the motor has three
phase pin connectors the motor base adapter should be bolted to the motor and the I-wire located in the
adapter used. A boot connector and splice kit is supplied with every MultiSensor. The boot kit consists of
a crimp connector, Teflon sleeve and boot.

The boot connector is fitted by slipping the rubber boot and Teflon sleeve over the I-wire then stripping
back 6mm of insulation for the crimp. The DMC crimp tool should be set for 12 AWG. The boot and
Teflon sleeve should be carefully slipped over the crimp.
A splice kit is supplied in case the I-wire is not of sufficient length. The Splice kit wire is 18 AWG.

The motor temperature can be measured in two ways. A motor oil thermocouple is supplied with the
MultiSensor or a motor winding thermocouple connected inside the motor. The motor oil thermocouple
plugs directly onto the MultiSensor feedthroughs and sits in the area inside the flange between
MultiSensor and motor. The motor winding thermocouple is attached to the motor windings and has two
colour coded wires which require boot connectors to fit to the colour coded feedthroughs. The boot
connectors are of the same design as used for the I-wire connection but smaller. They require the crimp
tool to be set for 22 AWG.
The Multisensor is supplied with 2 thermocouples, a short one (10 cm) for measuring the motor oil
temperature that is shipped fitted to the tool, and one long (200cm) for fitting inside the motor for
measuring motor winding temperature.
The long one is shipped without boot connectors fitted, but supplied loose, to enable it to be cut to the
size required and the boot connectors fitted in the field.
The black wire on the thermocouple must be connected to the black +ve feedthru and the white wire to
the white -ve feedthru.
The operation of the thermocouple must be tested before running the tool in hole.
To test the tool connect it to the surface panel and power up the system.
Heat the thermocouple. The easiest and safest way to do this is to place the tip in a cup of hot water.
Monitor the motor temperature,
The motor temperature should be seen to climb.
If the temperature drops the thermocouple is fitted reverse polarity. Reverse the connections and repeat
the test to confirm correct operation.
The MultiSensor can be connected to the motor in the horizontal position before picking the motor up to
the rig floor.
Remove any gaskets remaining on the motor from the shipping cap

The MultiSensor should be appropriately orientated for the discharge pressure line to run in any ESP neck
clamps. The MultiSensor should be offered up to the motor and the dummy boot removed from the
feedthrough. The previously connected boot connector on the I-wire should be plugged firmly onto the
feedthrough.
When satisfied that the boot connector is secure the MultiSensor should be pushed home into the motor
flange taking care not to snag the I-wire. The bolts should be tightened to 40 ft/lbs.
Do Not drag the attached MultiSensor when craning the motor to the

The MultiSensor should be lifted onto the rig floor and, with the hole covered, positioned vertically ready
for the motor to be stabbed in. The MultiSensor should be appropriately orientated for the discharge
pressure line to run in any ESP neck clamps. The motor should be picked up and positioned above the
MultiSensor allowing enough room to remove the boot protector cap from the feedthrough. The
previously connected boot connector on the I-wire should be plugged firmly onto the feedthrough.

When satisfied that the boot connector is secure the motor should be lowered taking care not to snag the

The panel should be connected to the pothead of the motor with the positive lead to a motor phase. The
panel should be powered up and diagnostic readings and parameter readings recorded. Refer to Fault

The motor and MultiSensor should be tested electrically using a Megger™. The MultiSensor can be tested

EARTH when a MultiSensor is attached.
The Discharge Pressure parameter is measured at the MultiSensor. The pressure is transferred from the
pump discharge to the MultiSensor by a 1/4” control line. A Pressure transfer sub assembly is made up to
the discharge head of the pump on which a take off port for the 1/4” line is attached.

The 1/4” control line is attached to the MultiSensor using a custom designed connector. This is attached
to the MultiSensor on the drill floor and tested to 5000 psi for 10 minutes using a hand pump filled with
hydraulic oil and the connection fitting attached to the top of the line.
The line is run along side the ESP and contained with ESP neck clamps or banded to the ESP. It is
terminated at the discharge pressure sub. The line is cut to length and the connector fitted using a
swage-lok connection.

7. Running in Hole
The MultiSensor should be function tested every hour when running in hole. The panel should be
connected to the ESP cable with the positive lead to phase. The panel should be powered up and
diagnostic readings and parameter readings recorded. Refer to Fault Finding section if error codes occur
on the ISP panel. Check parameter readings when running in hole to check on pressures, temperatures
and current leakage values.
The motor and MultiSensor should be tested electrically using a Megger™. The MultiSensor can be tested
up to 5kV.
