Surface Choke Assembly

The Phoenix surface choke, is used to isolate the Integrated Surface Panel (ISP) from the high
voltage AC on the ESP cable, but allows the DC signals to and from the ISP to pass freely. This
enables communication with the Multisensor Downhole Tool (MDT) without having very high
voltages present on the ISP.

This section of the manual details the different types of choke assemblies available and where
each are used. It gives detailed information on installation of the choke, and advise on which
choke is suitable for various set-ups. Also included is a brief fault finding guide.

SAFETY

WARNING

THE INTEGRATED SURFACE PANEL CONTAINS AND CONNECTS TO

POTENTIALLY LETHAL VOLTAGES.

ENSURE THE ISP POWER IS ISOLATED BEFORE REMOVING THE GLAND

PLATE OR TERMINAL ACCESS PLATE.

THE CONNECTION TO THE CHOKE CONSOLE MAY BE LIVE EVEN WHEN

THE ISP IS NOT POWERED DUE TO VOLTAGES COMING BACK FROM THE
ESP SYSTEM.

WARNING

NEVER WORK ON THE PHOENIX CHOKE CONSOLE WHILST THE ESP IS

POWERED.

ALWAYS ISOLATE THE ESP POWER BEFORE WORKING ON THE PHOENIX

CHOKE CONSOLE.

WARNING

DISCONNECT THE CHOKE CONSOLE FROM THE TRANSFORMER AND

HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM PRIOR TO ANY INSULATION (MEGGER TM ) TEST.

ALWAYS TEST WITH;

-VE LEAD TO CABLE PHASE

+VE LEAD TO EARTH (GROUND)

NEVER SPARK DISCHARGE THE CABLE.

FAILURE TO TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS WILL RESULT IN EQUIPMENT

DAMAGE.

1. Overview

The MultiSensor from Phoenix which communicate using the ESP electrical system require a choke
console to be installed in the wellhead electrical equipment. Two options are available ;
• Star Point Choke (recognisable by having a single fuse), and
• 3 Phase Choke (with four fuses). (3 phases and ground).

Star Point Chokes are used when the star point of the system is accessible (for instance, in a transformer
terminal box) and the 3 Phase Choke when no star point is available.

Both units are supplied un-enclosed for mounting within an existing DOL Starter or Transformer, or an
enclosure option is available to IP66.

The choke system has been designed to meet the highest European Regulations of FEA-M (1990),
Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration. It is exempt under CE Regulations although has
been tested with the ISP and MultiSensor as a system during CE Testing.

3. Selecting the proper Choke Option

In all instances the use of a Star Point Choke is preferred ;

• lower cost or purchase and maintenance,
• minimum number of fuses,
• smaller,
• provides for better de-coupling.

This is not always possible and to review, four electrical systems which may be used (below) and referred
to in the selection.

3.1 Star Phase Choke

Star Point Choke is only used when the star point will remain
electrically connected to the downhole ESP when the variable
speed drive or starter package is stopped. It is not suitable ;
• where there is no star point (delta connected
secondary), or
• where there is a disconnect contactor after the
transformer secondary.

For these two systems use the 3 Phase Option.

3.2 3 Phase Choke

A 3 Phase Choke can be used with all the systems drawn on

page 10. However as was stated it is preferred that a Star Point
Choke be used where possible and this leaves the scenario to
the left as those for the 3 Phase Choke.

Fuses are Bussman HVJ1/8 and when measured with an ohmmeter should be in the range 30 to 40 ohms.
If outside this range replace the fuse.

5.2 I n s u l a t i o n Te s t i n g

High voltage system must be isolated from the lightning barrier and link to the ISP prior to testing.
Always disconnect and isolate with HV sleeving the cable entering the lightning barrier. If you do not the
lightning barrier will cause the insulation test to fail.

As a precautionary measure disconnect the cable from the choke TB1 (which goes to the ISP) during
testing.

When powered on, the ISP will test the basic function of the choke and confirm ;
• low voltage insulation level (100 Vdc test) is good, and
• communications are being received from the MultiSensor.

The ISP will identify if the fuse has failed in the Star Point Choke. It is not possible to determine if any
one fuse has failed in the 3 Phase Choke until the ESP is running. If such a fault is suspected when the
unit is running then an alarm message will display requesting the choke fuses to be tested.
