Assessment overview The objective of this assessment is to assess your knowledge as would
be required to apply principles and procedures relating to
confidentiality, privacy and security to own work within the medical
environment.

Instructions for this This is a written assessment and it will be assessing you on your
assessment knowledge of the unit.
This assessment is in 2 parts:
1. Short answer questions
2. Assessment feedback

Submission instructions On completion of this assessment, you are required to upload it or hand
it to your trainer for marking. It is important that you keep a copy of all
electronic and hardcopy assessments submitted to TAFE and complete
the assessment declaration when submitting the assessment.

The estimated time for a student to complete this assessment is
90 minutes. However there is no time limit for students to
complete this assessment. Students may complete the
assessment outside of the classroom and submit to their teacher
for marking.

Each answer should be a minimum of 70 words but no longer than 250 words.

Requirement Policy/procedure

All staff must follow the following guidelines to minimise the


risk of potential breaches of confidentiality:
 Computer screens must not be able to be seen or be
accessible to the public including couriers and visitors.
 Computer screen displaying a previous patient’s data are
closed before the next patient enters the consulting room.
 Computing screens are locked when the doctor or staff
leave the consulting room or if the patient is left alone.
 Doctors must keep scripts, medications, medical records
and related personal patient information secure, whilst
they are not in attendance in their consulting room.
 Front desk staff must respect the privacy of patients at all
times when collecting information.
Maintaining  Patient medical records are under no circumstances to be
confidentiality placed on top of the reception desk. All incoming mail and
items for courier or pathology collection must be stored
out of public view.
 Incoming mail including patient results, reports etc are to
be date stamped by front desk staff and placed in treating
practitioners in tray. Once initialled by the doctor, carry
out any follow-up action, scan into patient clinical record
and check for legibility and then place original in secure
box under reception desk and shred daily.
 Whenever a door to any office, consulting or treatment
room is closed staff must knock and wait for a response
prior to opening the door.

Privacy

Our Privacy Policy is to be made available to all patients on

request. Front desk staff must ensure sufficient copies of the
policy are available at reception at all times.
Front desk staff are to alert all new patients to the privacy
policy overview at the bottom of the new patient registration
form.

Patients who wish to remain anonymous


Patients may choose to receive services anonymously if, for
example, sensitive issues arise or they feel they may be at
risk such as in domestic violence situations or difficult
relationships. In these circumstances, the use of an alias or
“disguised identity” may be used. All requests must be
referred to the Practice Manager.

Our surgery provides security for patients, staff and visitors.


All surgery staff are aware of, and are able to, implement
protocols to ensure the safety and security of all persons
within the surgery.
Our zero tolerance approach to verbal, aggressive and
violent abuse and behaviour towards staff and other patients
is clearly displayed in the waiting room and will not be
tolerated under any circumstances.
The premises are protected by an alarm system that has
Security motion detection sensors located throughout the surgery. A
“Panic” button, linked to the security system, is located under
the reception desk.
During routine surgery hours at least one reception staff
member, in addition to the practitioner must be present at all
times.
Medical records, prescription pads, letterheads,
administrative records and other official documents must not
be accessible to patients or visitors to the surgery.

5. Drugs, equipment and other materials need to be secured at all times to comply with

4. If some drugs get into the wrong hands it could cause very serious side effects or in some
cases it can be fatal. Knowing the policy and procedure for all medications and drugs will also
really help but if you get stuck you can also double check with a team leader or manager.

or customers, easy access to get a hold of a patients folder , and anyone can read through these
files.

S4 can not be kept in reach of any public, it must be kept behind the counter where the
pharmacist can assist you or the customer with whatever issue they need help with

It isn’t very practical, but you could store your eye drops, creams, injections (that don’t need to
be refrigerated)
