Sourashtra Unicode

Requiements:
Operating system: Windows
Browsers: Firefox(If not installed, download from http://www.mozilla.com/en-
US/firefox/personal.html )
Sourashtra Unicode font: Attached with this mail(Sourashtra.otf)
NHMWriter: To write in sourashtra directly. (Download from
http://software.nhm.in/products/writer )

Sourashtra Unicode Font Installation: Currently there is a font, called Code2000, which is a unicode
sourashtra font. But it does not have haddu yagaram, naagu sabdu and “KSha” . The font Sourashtra.oft
supports these three special characters.

First delete any sourashtra unicode font(do not need to delete sureshu or kuber fonts) from
C:\Windows\Font folder. Because browser may not detect the new font if there is more one version of
sourashtra unicode. You need to delete it before you install the new font.

Now copy & paste the sourashtra.oft font(attached in the mail) to the folder C:\Windows\Font.

After installation, if you open http://khenikeri.blogspot.com in Firefox browser. You can see the
sourashtra characters.

After installation, if you open the attached(in mail) Font_Test.txt file in notepad and select sourashtra
font. You can see the special characters too.
NHM Writer:

NHMWriter is used to write indic language using their phonetic notation like if you type ambaa when
you selected sourashtra in the tool, the same will be displayed in sourashtra language.

The steps are given here to install the tool and sourashtra key map(attached in the mail).

1. Go the website. http://software.nhm.in/products/writer and download the package. (Installation

Process is provided @ the page http://kmdfaizal.blogspot.com/2008/10/nhmwriter.html . I have also
attached the page as a pdf document [name: Install_NHMWriter.pdf])

2. After installation, you can able to see a bell shape in the task bar of the Window. Right click on the
button and select Settings (Picture SAZ_1). This step will open the setting page.

3. Click "Import" button to select the sourashtra Key Map. (Picture SAZ_2 & SAZ_3).

4. Select the Sourashtra Key Map as shown in the picture (Picture SAZ_4). The sourashtra key map
name is Sourashtra_Unicode_Phonetic.xml. The attached zip file(Sourashtra_Font_NHM) has the key
map file in it.

5. After you selected the key map, you can see the sourashtra in the setting window(Picture SAZ_5).

 6. Check the check box (just left to the word sourashtra - Picture SAZ_6)

7. Double click on the sourashtra row or on the word "none" (under the toggle key column Picture
SAZ_6). The will show a list with Alt 1 to Alt 9. Select Alt 7/Alt 8/Alt 9(Picture SAZ_6); because other
keys are already taken by default languages.
8. Once you select a key, the row will be moved up(picture SAZ_7). Click the OK button. The
application will say 'Application will be restarted now'. Now NHM software able to recognize
sourashtra key map

To activate sourashtra keymap

9.Click on the Bell symbol in the taksbar and select the Sourashtra Phonetic Unicode (alternatively you
can use the key combination (Alt 7) that is selected in the step 7).

10. Now if you type ambaa in notepad or word documents or in mails, it will be displayed in sourashtra
letters.

11. A key chart is given as an attachment(lipiBendu.jpg). This will give the sourashtra-english-tamil
phonetic equavalent.(Also given at the end of the this file)

Note:

a. Only Firefox support sourashtra script. So sourashtra letters will be displayed in the two browser
only. Chrome also support but sometime it does not detect the encoding.So better use Firefox only
when reading/writing Sourashtra.

b. If you are typing in notepad, microsoft word document, you have to select the sourashtra font if the
letters are not displayed.

c. whenever you type, make sure that bell button in the taskbar is in Yellow color; otherwise select the
sourashtra Phonetic unicode again as mentioned in the step 9.
