Exercise 11. INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS

Part II. Essay. Write your answer in the space provided. Your answer must be based on your
interpretation of what you read in this module. (5 pts. Each)
1. What benefits can knowledge discovery systems provide to the organization?
Knowledge Discovery Systems support the process of developing new tacit or explicit
knowledge from data and information or from the synthesis of prior knowledge. Knowledge Discovery
Systems support two KM sub processes associated with knowledge discovery: combination, enabling
the discovery of new explicit knowledge. Benefits of knowledge management are:
 More efficient workplace
 Faster, better decision making
 Increased collaboration
 Building organizational knowledge
 Employee onboarding and training process is optimized
 Increased employee happiness and retention, due to the valuing of knowledge, training, and
innovation

2. What steps are involved in creating a neural net?

Build a neural network in 7 steps:
1. Create an approximation project.
2. Configure data set.
3. Set network architecture.
4. Train neural network.
5. Improve generalization performance.
6. Test results.
7. Deploy model.

8. Explain the way a genetic algorithm functions?

A genetic algorithm works by building a population of chromosomes which is a set of possible
solutions to the optimization problem. Within a generation of a population, the chromosomes are
randomly altered in hopes of creating new chromosomes that have better evaluation scores. Genetic
algorithms are commonly used to generate high-quality solutions to optimization and search problems
by relying on biologically inspired operators such as mutation, crossover and selection.

9. How do expert systems contribute to the port operation in Singapore?

The port of Singapore has played a significant role in the development of Singapore, helping the
Republic become a first world economy in one generation. Five thousand or about 6 percent of those
containers end their journey in Singapore, while the rest are shipped on to destinations around the world.
The Port of Singapore holds the title of world's busiest container port because it handles the largest
amount of total shipping tonnage. Singapore's strategic location has also helped in making it such a giant
in the shipping industry. 20% of the world's transshipment trade passes through the Port of Singapore.

10. How does the technology help Singapore implement its economic strategy?
In economics, it is widely accepted that technology is the key driver of economic growth of
countries, regions and cities. Technological progress allows for the more efficient production of more
and better goods and services, which is what prosperity depends on. In Singapore, the Infocomm and
Communication Technology (ICT) sector is a key enabler for almost every industry sector, and has
enhanced Singapore's competitiveness by raising productivity and transforming business processes in
industries like finance, services and manufacturing. Technological advancement provides greater access
to the internet and the increasing use of mobile communications. This helps Singaporeans communicate
and exchange information across the world. Technology can be used to advertise products to the global
market and community.
