PRE-ACTIVITY:
Answer the following questions briefly.
Identify the evidence shown by the picture and explain how it supports evolution.
EVIDENCE NO. 1
Evidence from comparative anatomy- similarities in physical feature and function determines the
evolutionary relationships between organisms and whether or not they share common ancestors.
EVIDENCE NO. 2
Evidence from comparative embryology-similarities in the features of the embryo of different species
shows the evolutionary relationship between species.
EVIDENCE NO. 3
Evidence from fossil- fossil show that the organisms from the past are different as those found today;
differences shows the organisms undergo evolution.
Q3-WEEK 3 - MELC 8 Evolutionary Relationships of Organisms
The seal’s flipper and bird’s wing have the same structure of bones but have different
shape, size, and function.
1. What do scientists infer from the similarities between these two structures?
The scientists infer that seal and bid had a common ancestor
2. What do scientists call such a similar structure?
Homologous structure
3. Describe how DNA evidence might be used to confirm scientists’ conclusions about any
relationship between the bird and the seal.
The more similar the birds’ and seals’ DNA, the closer the relationship of the two
species.
REFLECTION:
I learned that a phylogenetic tree is a diagram that depicts the evolutionary relationships between organisms
or groups of creatures. A phylogenetic tree is a diagram that depicts the evolutionary relationships between
organisms or groups of creatures.
I realized that the fossil record was incomplete in Darwin's time, but many of the important gaps that existed
then have been filled by subsequent paleontological research. Perhaps the most persuasive
fossil evidence for evolution is the consistency of the sequence of fossils from early to recent.
