Unit 1: Engineering And Technology

Worksheet

Lesson 1: How Do Engineers Define Problems?

- Engineering is the process of designing new or improved

technology.

Question 1: Give two examples of engineered and not engineered

objects around you

Engineered Not Engineered

- Criteria are desirable features of the solutions.

Example: I want a rag that soaks up liquids.

- Constraints are a limit on possible solution.

Example: a limited budget or time.

Question 2: You want to build a bird house, tell one criteria you desire
and one constraint that might face you.

Lesson 2: How Do Engineers Design Solutions?

- One important first step is to learn more about the problem

before you start to design a solution.

- Solutions to problems can have many different parts. Looking at

others’ solutions can often help improve an existing design. In
other words, we can learn from past solutions to help us with new
and better solutions.

- It’s not enough for an engineer to say that a design works. It

needs to be tested to ensure it solves the problem. Each design
starts out as a prototype: an early version for testing.

- Testing and retesting solutions is important. A fair test: is one

that doesn’t give any advantage to the conditions or objects being
tested.

Lesson 3: How Do Engineers Test and Improve Prototypes?

- engineering solutions are designed and built to solve a problem.

- a first design doesn’t work. For example, a design might work

okay, but testing suggests that it can work a lot better.

- When engineers work on design solutions, team members often

communicate with each other. Communication is an important part
of most situations.

- Feedback is important in solving any problem. One way you can

give a good feedback is Tell the person that the design is built
well, but still suggest some possible improvements.

- engineers communicate after testing solutions to try to

optimize: or make as good as possible, their solutions and designs.

- The diagram shows a process for designing solutions.
