Start with veggies that are easy-to-grow for novices such as lettuce, spinach, bush beans,
cherry tomatoes, and herbs such as parsley, thyme and basil. To bring in butterflies, choose
flowers. Besides adding charm to your garden, flowers provide environment for our shrinking
pollinator populations and bring in butterflies and birds. Your vegetable garden also requires
bees and other beneficial pests to drink nectar and move pollen around so your plants will
yield.
You can't get proficient at gardening unless you gain from your experiences. Also, note when
you fertilized and when your garden saw its last frost in spring and its first frost in fall. Put
your garden to bed for fall. After the very first frost, remove dead plants. Do not compost
anything that was unhealthy.
