Course Title: SOCIAL SCIENCE & PHILOSOPHY

Course Description:

The course Social Science and Philosophy will confront students with the various schools
of thought in philosophy that build the (potential) background of their own research project
relevant to the maritime industry.

Social Sciences study the social behavior of the mammalian species, Homo sapiens. It is
also a study of human behavior by scientific method. The way in which people have tried
to develop a scientific approach to the investigation of human social behavior through the
studying Philosophy. Philosophy of science is the study of general and fundamental
problems concerning matters such as the nature knowledge, truth, justice, mind and
language.

This course will tell you the root of all knowledge or mother of all sciences. Philosophy
helps to coordinate the various activities of the individual and the society. It helps us to
understand the significance of all human experiences. It develops acomprehensive system
of thoughts about the universe and the life as a whole.

Pre-requisite: NONE
Credit: 3 units; 3 hours lecture/week
Semester Offered: 1ST and 2ND Semesters
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. Understand the History of Social Science and Philosphy
2. Examine the differences of Political Theory and Political
Philosophy
3. Understand the proper utilization of Knowledge, volunterism such
as Social Works and the Ways of Knowing
4. Understand the Concepts of Social Science and Theories of
Philosophy
 Positivism and Empiricism;
 Epistemology, Ontology and Axiology;
 Nature of Meaningful Behavior;
 Importance of Culture and being a Human Persons in the
Society; and
 Theories of Social Stratification.
