In January 2020, the country's first instance of COVID-19 infection was discovered, and by
March, the country had been placed under a severe community quarantine that prohibited
mobility and industrial activity. While these actions reduced the development of COVID-19 in
the community, they had a major negative impact on family incomes, jobs, children's education,
food security, and firms.
The Philippines has had remarkable economic development and is regarded as one of Asia's
fastest-growing economies.  The advent of the COVID-19 epidemic, on the other hand, threw the
country's economy into a tumble, ending nearly three decades of continuous development. The
Philippines' economy has endured both the Asian and latest global financial crisis. As quarantine
restrictions are eased, the employment situation is projected to improve in the following quarters,
but it will take some time for the labor market to return to pre-pandemic levels. The number of
displaced workers was highest in Metro Manila.
The government is preparing an additional fiscal support package to be implemented in
September, which is expected to include cash subsidies to low-income households, support for
displaced workers and critical sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and transportation, as well as
relief for the health-care system, among other things. These types of policies will have a huge
multiplier impact and keep the economy on pace for recovery next year.
