The Future of the Flash Gordon Franchise
WHO IS FLASH GORDON?
The original Space Opera Hero, Flash Gordon is an All-American Hero who has traveled

the stars and has landed on the Planet Mongo. With the help of Dr. Hans Zarkov and Dale Arden,

Flash has risen against the Emperor of Mongo, Ming the Merciless. While he avoids the

affection of Ming’s daughter Aura, Flash joins the rebellion against Ming. To this end Flash has

united the citizens of Mongo against Ming’s tyranny. Flash is at constant war with Ming, always

trying to prevent him from taking Mongo back under his evil ways. Flash’s work is never done,

as Ming will not rest until he has taken back Mongo.

FLASH’S HISTORY…
Created by Alex Raymond, Flash Gordon was created as a competitor to Buck Rogers.

He was a young college athlete attending Yale University. Flash, along with the young female

Dale Arden, was kidnapped by Scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. Zarkov took the pair on an

experimental rocket ship to the planet Mongo. There, they experienced the tyranny of the evil

Ming the Merciless, who sought to make Dale his bride and breed a race of superior beings to

take over Earth.

The 1950’s re-invented Flash as an Astronaut exploring other planets and Star Systems.

In the 70’s he found a nemesis in Baron Dak-Tula, a Skorpi Space Fighter. Since the 50’s Flash

has encountered new villains outside of Ming the Merciless. His adventures eventually brought

him back to Mongo where he battled the likes of the Witch Queen Azura. A run where Flash had

adventures on Earth saw him battle the Red Sword Organization. It was an age of reinvention for

Flash.
Through the 30’s and 40’s Buster Crabbe portrayed Flash in a series of Movie Serials,

chronicling the daring hero’s adventures against Ming the Merciless. Through the 50’s through

to the Early 2000’s Flash appeared as a main or supporting character in a variety of television

series, both live action and animated. Few re-invented the character but the ones that did, did so

to little fanfare. Never the less Flash has remained a cultural figure and is constantly beloved.

Flash Gordon comic books are still published, having been in publication since the beginning of

Alex Raymond’s original comic strip. The character has had a considerable amount of time spent

in development for a Epic Feature Length Film, that changed in the 1980’s.

The 1980’s saw the release of a long in-development film that re-imagined Flash as

Quarterback for the New York Jets. Flash, played by Sam Jones, was an All-American looking

actor who fit what producer Dino De Laurentiis was looking for in the titular character. In the

film he freed Mongo from the terror of Ming the Merciless. While commercially the film

underperformed it left a lasting impact. Flash Gordon was no longer a great comic book hero, he

was a cultural icon. It was the last time Flash Gordon has appeared in film.

WHO IS (OUR) FLASH GORDON?

This version of Flash is a NASCAR Driver, driving the #65 car. He stands at 6’ 1”,

weighs 210lbs, and is roughly 34 years old. He loves speed but is very careful in his moves

during a race, though he does have Flaws: He is Bold and a bit of a Bigmouth. He’s got charisma

that often helps him succeed. For all his flaws, Flash carries a strong moral compass imbued to

him by a wholesome upbringing by his parents.

Alex “Flash” Gordon was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was Samuel Raymond

Gordon, was a steel worker and former member of the United States Marines. His mother,

Melody Gordon (‘nee Ross), was a former High School Teacher and Homemaker. It was his
father that drew his interest in NASCAR and racing, while his mother was guiding him towards

going to college and getting a white-collar job. Flash eventually joined the military via Air

Force, he served the minimum 2 years in service. When he got out, he began amateur racing

around his home town. During his Amateur racing he met the daughter of a local mechanic: Dale

Arden.

Dale became Flash’s Pit Chief and assisted him every step of the way in his local racing

career. Working together inspired the two to have a flirtatious relationship. They’ve nearly dated

numerous times, but Flash’s boldness had usually prevented that. While it might be a trait to

admire on the track, Flash’s boldness was hardly a trait to envy in a romance. Deep down Flash

loves Dale, often having turned down relationships on the idea of getting up the courage to ask

her out. Dale has waited for Flash to make a move and has gotten a little tired of the game, this

has led to Dale to focus on her career and becoming integral to Flash’s racing team.

While Flash loved the feeling in the driver’s seat, he feels the sport is constrained and

limited fashion. Flash has sought to improve the conditions of the sport by taking it to the next

level: hover cars. To this he has sought out Dr. Hans Zarkov, formally at NASA. Zarkov was a

revolutionary scientist who was building a space ship for extraterrestrial exploration after

receiving transmissions from another planet. Hans took the money from Flash, began working on

his Star Ship “Copernicus-1.” Hans, intending to make good on his deal with Flash, Hans is

working on the hover car concept for Flash, balancing between the two projects.
FLASH’S SUPPORTING CHARACTERS…
The FLASH GORDON comic strip has no shortage of colorful and inventive characters.

From a society that worships the tyrannical Emperor Ming, to those who’ve long wished to

overthrow him. Flash Gordon has one of the most intriguing supporting cast. With a plethora of

interesting and capable characters, there is enough room to build a full Cinematic Universe. Here

we will outline some of the more fantastical and interesting characters for the universe to

explore, these are foundational characters who provide the greatest base for various spin-off

projects. These are the supporting characters of Flash Gordon.

DALE ARDEN
Flash’s Pit Chief, and eventual Girlfriend. Dale was born to Father, Stephen Arden – a

Mechanic from Missouri, and her mother Melody (‘nee Champlan) Arden, a former

Cartographer. Dale is the eldest of five children, having four brothers (Buster, Steven, Sam, and

Eric). She was a tough tom-boyish girl growing up, learned more from her father’s side than she

did from her mother. Through her father she developed a passion for racing, and became a local

mechanic known for putting old racing cars back together.

She’s been Flash’s best friend since high school and is capable keeping him inline and

rational. She grows from someone who’s comfortable taking a position guiding Flash to capable

of fighting next to him. This is, to put it carefully, our Princess Leia, powerful and dedicated to

her mission. Dale is both feminine and tough, often being ready for action. She’s every bit as

personally tough as Flash and capable of taking care of herself. She’s a smart mechanic and very

capable for reworking things. She’s self-assured, critical at times, and hot headed.
DR. HANS ZARKOV
Formally at NASA, Dr. Hans Zarkov is what many call and erratic scientist who claimed

to receive visions of another Planet: Mongo. He was born in Israel and immigrated to the United

States at a young age through various scholarships. Through his scholarly efforts he was hired

onto NASA to help launch the United States into the next era of Space Exploration. During his

time at NASA he received visions of a planet in the midst of an apocalypse and attempted to

build a star ship to explore outer space and seek out the source of these visions. His mania and

obsession with building his star ship he was expelled from his position at NASA and sank the

remainder of his little fortune into the project. With little funding added to the project and little

hope, Zarkov fell into a pit of depression until he was sought out by NASCAR’s Flash Gordon.

Flash offered Zarkov the opportunity to finish his Star Ship on the condition of helping

Flash build a Hover Car. Flash was hoping to use the invention to bring a new era to racing. With

Flash providing funding, Zarkov used the funds, in secret to finish his Star Ship. Zarkov plans to

leave Earth in search of the planet in his visions. Zarkov, however, found a very large flaw – his

Star Ship couldn’t be piloted by one man. This causes Zarkov to force Flash, and incidentally

Dale, to go with him on his star ship. Aboard his star ship “Copernicus-1” they land on Mongo.

PRINCE BARIN
Leader of Arboria, Barin is one of several Princes of Mongo. A title he hates, preferring

to call himself the “King of Aboria.” Ming forbids the title from him as a “Punishment” for his

relationship with Ming’s only child: Aura. He waits every day for a chance to strike at Ming,

wanting to rid the planet of his tyrannical rule. Barin has shown care and love for his people in

Arboria, and feels that his style of compassionate leadership should be brought to Mongo, over

the fear
KING VULTAN
King of the Hawkmen, an avian War-Tribe living in the Sky City of Mongo. Vultan is a

warrior King, who’s risen through the ranks to rule the Hawkmen. He cares about his people but

doesn’t care for the rest of Mongo and takes some convincing to act against Ming. He hates

Ming and sees Ming as a constant threat to his people, but he weighs the threat of acting against

Ming now and waiting for an opportune moment. When Flash arrives to Mongo, Vultan has to

decide once and for all whether he will stand against Ming. He will force Flash to prove himself

and show Vultan the risk to his people is worth it.

MING THE MERCILESS

The ‘Rightful’ Emperor of the Universe. A Native Son of the Planet Mongo, Ming was

once a member of a tribe that survived in the Great Mongo Desert. In his tribe he had a wife,

Auranae, and his father – Kang – was the tribal leader. During this time the Planet suffered under

the rule of the Witch Queen Azura. With Kang’s effort the Worlds of Mongo united and locked

the Witch Queen away. For his place in this revolution Kang became Emperor and Ming, the

Military Prince.

Kang’s cruelty as emperor sparked a 2nd revolution, this time with Ming seeking to

overthrow his own father. The new revolution caused Auranae’s death, greatly hurting Ming who

vowed revenge. Her death caused a change in Ming, leaving him to raise their only child. This

sparked a unique sense of cruelty in Ming that turned him into the most tyrannical emperor

Mongo would ever see. After Ming secured his rule as emperor of Mongo, his actions were

deemed ‘Merciless’ and there he adopted the name “Ming the Merciless.” He has since taken the

resources of the other worlds of Mongo to keep them inline, demanding a tribute every year on

the anniversary of his wife’s passing.

PRINCESS AURA
The daughter of Ming the Merciless and the last remnant of Ming’s heart. She doesn’t

remember the kinder man her father once was, only the tyrannical monster he’s become. She

grapples between her luxury and her soul telling her to fight back against Ming. She makes her

choice to fight back against her father and has began working in secret. Her private rebellion

caused her to fall in love with Prince Barin. She takes her true mission to heart forcing her to

take a string of lovers who help her in her attempts to undermine her father, while continuously

rebutting the affection of Ming’s Grand Visor: Klytus.

KLYTUS
Grand Visor of Mongo, Servant to his Majesty Emperor Ming the Merciless. Klytus is an

opportunist who constantly plans and schemes. He aims to take the position of Emperor for

himself. Klytus is a scientific genius and has created legions of loyal soldiers, as well as

augmenting Ming’s soldiers with a device that would allow him to siege immediate control.

Klyuts has many contingencies in place, should he ever make his move against his master.

Klytus is as cruel as he is intelligent and has taken the pleasure of torturing many of Ming’s

prisoners.

THE WITCH QUEEN AZURA

The cruel and monstrous Witch Queen of Mongo. She held a position of power for

centuries, her mystic abilities keeping her both young and ahead of any dangers. Her displeasure

with the tributes of the Desert Men of Mongo eventually saw the rise of Ming. She was trapped

in her own temple, her abilities dampened. In her exile she waited, baiting her abilities for when

she is freed and can once again claim her rightful place as the Queen of Mongo. She is quick to

wage war against the New Mongo Republic and it’s champion: Flash Gordon.
PRINCE THUN
The Warrior Prince of the Lion Men of Mongo. Thun is one of many who wish to stand

against Ming’s rule and has in secret sabotaged many of Ming’s supply lines but to hardly any

notice to Ming himself. He’s grown attachment to the tribe, but he and his people have been

pitted against Prince Barin’s Men as well as the Hawkmen. Thun is challenged by his father’s

bullheaded loyalty, unaware of the secrets that torture King Jugrid. Thun seeks to free the planet

from Ming’s terror and is the most welcome from Flash Gordon’s arrival on Earth.

KING JUGRID
The troubled king of the Lion Men of Mongo. He was once a trusted military aid to Ming

before his rule over Mongo and considered him a friend. Jugrid was part of the previous

revolutions and has been taken aback by how bad revolutions have gone for Mongo. He is weary

of joining any other cause and prefers to pay his tributes to Ming and stay hidden. Jugrid mourns

the person Ming use to be and has developed an apathy to the world outside of the Jungle Lands

of Ardentia. His son, Prince Thun often presses him in matters relating to the Lion Men’s loyalty

to Ming.

KING KALA
King Kala, the prideful ruler of the Shark Men of Mongo, live underneath the kingdom in

the Great Sea of Mystery. With his Kingdom centered at Shark City near Ardentia, Kala is

constantly at odds with King Jugrid. Kala is considered a Ming Loyalist, at his heart Kala is

someone who’s loyalty can be bought or gambled. He had sat out the previous revolutions started

by Ming, waiting on the sidelines to praise the winner giving the impression that the Shark Men

are cowards. The Shark Men are gamblers and none more-so than Kala who specifically enjoys

Racing. The Shark Men are known for having underwater races and has become a notable sport.
KIMJO
An exiled Lion Man, who wanders the outskirts of Mongo aimlessly with a grudge

against Ming. Kimjo was exiled for an attack on Ming’s Grand Visor Klytus. He seeks to earn

redemption and be welcomed back into his pride, but refuses to bow to Ming. He still carries a

friendship with Thun, who appreciated his defiance against Ming. Kimjo has found an alliance

with other defectors who carry disdain for Ming’s rule. He waits for the great war against Ming,

feeling the rebellion against him inevitable.

PRINCE VULKOR
An exiled and hot headed Hawkman and Vultan’s Brother. Vulkor has lost his honor in

the eyes of the Hawkmen after challenging and losing to King Vultan. He had sought to use the

Hawkmen to start the revolution against Ming. Since then, he’s lived on the outer cities of

Mongo working as a mercenary to survive. He was sought out by Kimjo to join a rebellion

against Ming. He has been an effective warrior in attacking Ming’s outer city forces, having

taken back the Cave World: Syk.

GENERAL ZIVA ALJAANI

A rebel against Ming’s rule and native child of the Mongo Desert Lands. Ziva was once a

high-ranking General who directly suffered at the affection of Klytus. She was made painfully

aware of Ming’s cruelty after being ordered to execute a village for refusing to pay their tribute.

Faced with the responsibility to execute poor men, women, and children was too much for her to

take and caused her to turn against Ming. Since then she has been on the run and has taken up

with an ever growing rebellion in the Syk Lands. She hopes to see the bigger kingdoms to turn

against Ming and she waits calmly for the oncoming war.
QUEEN FRIA
Queen of the Iceland Frigia, the northern region of Mongo, arguably the largest, albeit

lowly populated, region of the planet. If anyone holds any large threat to Ming’s power it’s Fria.

Though she is bored of the political landscapes and often sends half hearted tributes to the great

emperor. Fria is tantalized by Flash Gordon, having never seen someone who seemed so

“powerless” inspire so many. Fria is challenged by a lot of notions upon meeting Flash and

should her support be swayed; the rebellion would have a fighting chance at dethroning Ming.

She is among many who once called Ming friend, before his ascension to emperor.

CHARACTERS SUMMARY
These are the characters who play the largest role in the Flash Gordon Saga. There’s an

untapped potential with these characters to help build a massive cinematic and television

franchise – Effectively known as the Flash Gordon Universe. This will be its own dynasty

honoring the Space Opera Hero.

THE FRANCHISE
The plan for FLASH GORDON is to launch a full and broad cinematic universe. Flash himself

is a perfect center point for a universe to focus on. With a plethora of characters outside of Flash

that are perfectly suited for their own stories to be chronicled in a cinematic universe. This is a

universe of cinematic potential with many great characters that can avoid some mistakes. The

universe surrounding Flash is as rich and interesting as the universes for properties like Star

Wars, Star Trek, and the Marvel Universe. The idea here is to plan this franchise, allowing it to

flourish under a supervised plan while allowing plenty of creative freedom to tell the best stories

possible. This is our Franchise Plan for FLASH GORDON.

MOVIES
The Main Focus of our Flash Gordon Universe, the franchise is spearheaded by a series

of Main line films. The ambitious idea would be to do a series of 9 films, split into three trilogies

telling a different level of the Flash Gordon story. We deal with Flash learning who he really is,

A Rebel, A Hero, and A Legend. This tells Flash’s story from his career as the world’s most

popular Racecar Driver to him leading the people of Mongo in a final battle for its sovereignty.

These will be large episodic films that tell a cohesive narrative as individual films, trilogies, and

a connected film series. This is in effort to build a much bigger franchise around the characters in

both film and television.

The idea would be to film each entry in a trilogy at the same time, taking a 2- or 3-year

hiatus between Trilogies. This is a very laborious practice but has really proved to be effective in

creating a very specific tone and keeping up with the story. The films would follow a simple, and

possibly rushed film schedule, releasing one film a year, with breaks in between the trilogy films

so the public can miss the big movie spectacle we present in the mainline films. The release

schedule for the films is needed to build the story and keep it tonally and quality consistent. The

benefit of the model we’re working on is that everything is roughly planned out, so we’ll know

what we’re building to, what we foreshadow, and what comes back. We know our “A” to “Z”

but with breathing room for the various spin-off properties we’re fostering to feel new and

unique while not breaking or retconning what will be established in the films.

Each film will start with an opening crawl. Some might call this tired, but it can be done

and it can feel fresh and original. The Crawl will be set to Queen’s Flash Gordon. We’ll present

the crawl in a manner similar to an electric light show, building a volume of energy for each

adventure. This will replace the traditional opening credits. This is how each adventure begins.
THE FALL OF MING TRILOGY
The Fall of Ming will chronicle the first Mongo Planetary War. In this Ming will attempt

to destroy the Earth in retaliation for Flash’s rising rebellion, wed Dale Arden to create a race of

Super Beings fit for ruling Earth, and finally merge Earth into Mongo – growing the volume of

the planet and expanding the Ming Empire. In the films Flash will do everything he can to stop

Ming.
