Question.
Malaysia have large oil palm plantation area and encompasses different type of oil palm
characteristics based on its health status, age and yield. Write an essay that discusses on how
remote sensing can be applied to determine those oil palm characteristics.

The capture of information about an object by a recording device that is not in direct contact
with it is known as remote sensing. The phrase is now routinely used to denote the collection,
viewing, interpretation, and analysis of aerial or satellite-based images. So, in oil palm
monitoring, remote sensing application can be use in various application such as land cover
classification, automatic tree counting, change detection, age estimation, above ground
biomass (AGB) estimation, carbon estimation, pest and disease detection, and yield estimation.

For determining the health status, the age and yield of the oil palm tree, we need to collect data
in Landsat 8 (Infrared or Near Infrared). This is because Optical imagery collects radiation in
the visible and near-infrared (NIR) region reflected from the surface. There are different signals
collected from the sunlight throughout the electromagnetic spectrums, as example blue, green,
red, red edge, NIR, and infrared band, depending on the sensor capabilities to detect them.
Different health status and age of the oil palm produce different intensity levels across the
spectrum. We use the near infrared radiation because healthy green vegetation is a very strong
reflector of infrared radiation and appears bright red on colour infrared or near infrared. By
transforming to specific band values, we can obtain vegetation indices that describe vegetation
by its greenness. The yield of the oil palm is determined from the fruit. But, from the remote
sensing view it is impossible to see the fruits from above, we need to resorted to emphasising
on the oil palm's strength and healthiness as a sign of good productivity. So that we can
determine the health status, the age and yield of the oil palm tree.
