EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT

Nature of Leadership of your Leadership Styles Pros and Cons

Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is a human activity that comes from the
heart and considers the heart of others. It is an attitude, not a routine. When the leadership is
right and the time is right; the people can always be counted upon to follow – to the end and at
all costs.
At various points during our professional lives, most of us find ourselves on opposing
sides of the leadership coin- we play the roles of both leader and subordinates, which situations
and where they come up short. Another truth is that most of us develop a keen sense of which
type of a leader we’re dealing with in any given situation.
Building a solid understanding of effective leadership through experience empowers us
to be better leader and to be better appreciating the leadership of others, especially in
unexpected situations. The truth is, no leadership style is perfect in every situation. Some may
work well at certain moments and fail in others.to be an inspiring leader you do not have to be
the smartest, or even the popular one in the group. What does require is the character and
firmness in your dedication to betterment.
Thus in our school, I observe that our principal uses different leadership styles. She
always uses authoritarian type of leadership but sometimes she shows democratic type of
leadership and terms of accomplishment reports she uses Laissez- faire style of leadership.
I can say that she is an authoritarian type of leader because she makes decisions
without consulting us. She uses coercion if she is not obeyed by us. One of the examples is in
terms of MOOE Budget Allocations. In our AIP and SIP, the priority must be the leaking roof of
many classrooms and Installation of window grills in Grade six Classrooms because of the thief
incidents that happen were important things in the classroom were stolen. What she did
instead is she installed a sliding door in our co- teachers classroom (as per requested by our
collegue) were in fact it needed to have a canal first so that the classroom will be safe from
landslide which may lead the sliding window useless. As we convey our thoughts about that
matter all she can say is that “I’m The Principal, You must obey! What we did is just keep quiet
and stop suggesting.
Although it may not seem so, there are some benefits to her decision and that is great
accomplished at work. But as we thought about it, it has negative consequences. She cannot
have our hearts as well as loyalties and most especially it may lead us to think the unfairness,
abuse of power and other negative implication of her decision. We also motivated by fear –
which is usually not a place to do our best and it may drove us to ask for new leader.
Even though she uses authoritarian type of leadership, somehow I can say that she’s
also a democratic leader. In a way that she let us do whatever we like in our classroom
structure as long as it is in accordance with the DepEd standards. She let us use our preferred
teaching styles in teaching children as long as we produce quality students and having a high
MPS in our performance indicators. Also we have a free rein in all school activities such as
Nutrition Month, United Nations and other activities granting it will raise a school fund and it
must be successful.
In this kind of leadership style of our principal it may promote us to have high morale
and we will yield high individual productivity. But as it happens, we will be able to accomplish
slowly because we tend to depend on others. It also promotes unclear or overlapping workers
roles.
In addition, our principal also practices laissez – faire style of leadership in terms of
office works and accomplishment reports. Like in Learners information System (LIS), Property
Custodian report, nutrition report and others, as long as we are not late in submitting the
report. She just sign it and let us pass. In this leadership style of our principal, it encourages us
to be more creative and develop new ideas. It will result high satisfaction because we are the
one to do the job base on our skills and knowledge. It also provides us occupational freedom.
On the other hand, this type of leadership style will develop lack of accountability and
fosters potential for poor time management and individual inefficiency. The ancillary works that
has given to us will affect our teaching- learning process in the classroom because there are
times that passing accomplishment reports are usually ASAP.
In conclusion, even our principal uses unsuited leadership styles in a certain situation
who am I to judge her. As a professional teacher, we know that we tend to commit mistakes
and we don’t have the monopoly of knowledge. But somehow, as teacher we are able to solve
any problem that arises in our station because we are known to be as “jack of all trades”. As
well as we are not perfect enough or right in everything we do. We may be wrong in some
decisions in our lives but at the end of the day, there is God who will guide us in the right path
and teach us lesson in life that we may not forget for it will serve as a basis in order for us to be
successful someday.
