Heat Exchangers Design

It is desired to heat 4450 Kg/h of cold benzene

from 300 K to 322 K using hot toluene which is
cooled from 344 K to 311 K. The specific
gravities of benzene and toluene are 0.88 and
0.87 respectively. A fouling factor of 1.60 X 10 -4
m2 K/W should be provided for each stream. A
number of 6 m hairpins of 50 by 31.75 mm IPS
pipe are available. How many hairpins are
required?

Effectiveness – NTU method of HTA

•   Effectiveness   –   NTU method is used when the
temperatures of the fluids leaving the exchanger
are not known.
•   This method is based on the effectiveness of a
heat exchanger in transferring a given amount of
heat.

For obtaining an expression for the heat transfer
rate without involving any of the outlet
temperatures, let us introduce the term
effectiveness.

A double-pipe heat exchanger is constructed of a copper (k =

380 W/m · °C) inner tube of internal diameter Di = 1.2 cm and
external diameter D o  = 1.6 cm and an outer tube of diameter
