Lesson 14: Deontological Ethical Theory
Activity: From the lesson Deontological Ethical Theory, is abortion permissible in this particular ethical theory? Discuss your answer clearly. This is good for 20 points, observe correct grammar and write with valuable substance. Abortion is a controversial ethical topic that generates a wide range of responses from people of diverse races, religions, and ethical perspectives. As a Christian, I do not think that aborting an innocent child is a moral act, and neither do I believe that it is permissible under the Deontological Ethical Theory. The deontological ethics viewpoint is based on a different notion of humanity's essence, or what we term "human nature." The Kantian feature of "categorical imperative" has been presented in this lesson, but this intellectual perspective is supplemented by a theological dimension, in our case from Christianity. Each individual or human being, according to this perspective, is a form of divine creation. "In the image and likeness of God," all persons are created. Life is a gift from God, and everyone should be grateful for it. The right to life is founded on the premise that God is the only source of life, and that only divinity has moral justification and the power to end all life. Every human being and every result of human conception has an unconditional right to life. No person has the right or authority to end a form of human life. Abortion is a sin under these circumstances because it goes against divine order, which is the natural order of the world.
