HISTO RY2
ASSIGNMENT 2
What do
films made
today say
about our
age?
HACKSAW
RIDGE
2016
The true story of Pfc. Desmond T.
Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the
OVERVIEW
Congressional Medal of Honor despite HACKSAW
refusing to bear arms during WWII on RIDGE
religious grounds. Doss was drafted
and ostracized by fellow soldiers for
his pacifist stance but went on to
earn respect and adoration for his
bravery, selflessness and compassion
after he risked his life -- without
firing a shot -- to save 75 men in
the Battle of Okinawa.
This war movie about World War II and how
war hero Desmond Doss, a pacifist, went
RELEVANCE
into battle with no guns and weapons but OF THE MOVIE
still saved many lives. Moreover, this
biographical film shows the situation of
our conflict-ridden past and how
exceptional people arise through the
chaos and hardships. It shows how our
society can learn from the heroism of
Doss even if we had different beliefs and
ideologies in certain things. Thus, we
could concur that we could still learn
things from the past and still in some
ways apply it to the present.
ANGELS &
DEMONS
2009
In Ron Howard's thrilling follow-up to
The Da Vinci Code, expert symbologist
Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) follows
ancient clues on a heart-racing hunt OVERVIEW
through Rome to find the four Cardinals
kidnapped by the deadly secret society,
ANGELS &
the Illuminati. With the Cardinals' DEMONS
lives on the line, and the Camerlengo
(Ewan McGregor) desperate for help,
Langdon embarks on a nonstop, action-
packed race through sealed crypts,
dangerous catacombs, and the most
secretive vault on Earth!
This modern intellectual mystery film
delves into history, art, religion and
conspiracy of the things the we know of and RELEVANCE
we don’t know of. It follows the usual OF THE MOVIE
pattern of Dan Brown books where it is
about “man’s quest for the divine”. This
movie gives us insight about how history
and mankind are on a struggle for truth and
enlightenment.
FREEDOM
WRITERS
2007
It is based on the book The Freedom Writers
RELEVANCE
while showcasing a romace enough to
swoon for. This BL goes to show that
we as a society are accepting the
existence of individuals that were
OF THE SERIES
wrongly deemed before as sick and
different. Embracing these not new
ideas in this modern context evidently
shows us as a society and where we are
when it comes to tolerance and
acceptance.
