Michael Palin
Michael Palin was born in 1943. He studied
history at Oxford University. Palin met his wife
in 1959, but they didn’t marry until 1966.
After university, he didn’t work as a
historian—he worked as an actor and a TV
writer from 1965 to 1980.
Then, in 1980, he made a TV show about a
trip by train, and he found that he loved travel
and exploration. So he changed his job. He
made travel programs for thirty years.
Palin started to write a personal diary in 1969.
He wrote something almost every day. In
2006, he published three books of his diaries.
Each book described a period of ten years in
his life. Palin says when he prepared the three
books, he remembered many things from his

We want all visitors to our beautiful park to

• The weather can change quickly in the park.
When it’s cold, you lose 80% of your body’s
heat from your head. Take a hat with you and
wear it when you are cold.
• You can get medical help at the National
Park visitor’s center, but take a first-aid kit
with you on long walks.
• For long walks and climbing, you can buy a
map from the National Park store. This shows
all the walks and routes through the park.
• There are three levels of routes for walkers

Lost Ship Discovered
In 1533, a Portuguese ship traveled from
Portugal to India with lots of gold and
diamonds. But at the southern part of Africa,
the weather was bad and the ship never
arrived. It sank and the crew died.
Five hundred years later, a worker in Namibia
discovered a small piece of metal in the
Orange River. It was money. Later,
archaeologists pulled more gold coins from
the river. There were also parts of a ship. It
was the old Portuguese ship, so the
archaeologists learned more about people’s
lives five hundred years ago.
