Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world faced problems in the waste management
market, with over two billion people lacking access to waste collection and over three billion
lacking access to waste disposal. Panic buying of basic amenities leads to increased waste
disposal especially perished goods. The global pandemic has led to an unusual amount of
reported medical waste. Levels of hospital medical waste increased by sixfold. To contain the
spread of COVID-19, the World Health Organization projects a monthly global expenditure
of 1.6 million plastic-based protective goggles, 76 million plastic-based examination masks,
and 89 million plastic-based medical masks.
Impact on waste management sector: the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its
corresponding social distancing measures, reduced staff amplify the already burdened sector.
Due to low oil prices and demand, the competitiveness of recycled plastics has declined,
hence affecting the price of virgin plastics. A temporary ban on cross-border movements
affects developing countries that depend on foreign technology for waste recycling activities,
and hence, most of the waste generated during the pandemic is disposed of rather than
recycled.
