Skin Contact Immediately wash with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation
persists. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse.
Inhalation Remove person to fresh air. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Ingestion DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention. Never give anything by mouth to
an unconscious person.
Coal Tar (MSDS 9942)) Page 2
Coal tar contains polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons which are proven to be carcinogenic in
both animals and humans. Coal tar is listed by NTP as a carcinogen. Prolonged or repeated
skin contact may cause skin cancer. Long term inhalation overexposure may cause
pulmonary cancer.
Acute effects on humans Inhalation may cause upper respiratory irritation. Moderate irritation of skin and eyes. May
cause chemical burns on contact. Skin photosensitization (more sensitive to sunlight
resulting in severe sunburn) may occur. Headache, dizziness and nausea.

Fire degradation products Carbon compounds. Carbon oxides (CO, CO2), Coal tar pitch.
Flash Points 102oC. (215.60F.) Flash point may be lowered depending on vapour space.
Fire Extinguishing Procedures Use DRY chemicals, CO2, foam. Use SCBA during fire fighting.
Flammability Under open spill conditions tar is not normally combustible. In confined areas such as
storage tanks, tanker trucks, or process vessels with a vapour space the vapour space
will in many cases be close to or above the LEL.
Hazardous Decomp. Products Carbon compounds. Carbon oxides (CO, CO2), Coal tar pitch.
Corrosivity No specific information is available in our database regarding the corrosivity of this
product in presence of various materials.
Reactivity Reacts violently with strong oxidizers such as liquid chlorine, sodium or potassium
hypochlorite, nitric acid and peroxides.

Storage Keep in a cool, well-ventilated place protected from damage. Keep away from heat,
flame and ignition sources.
Precaution Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid breathing vapours or spray mists. No smoking,
welding, or ignition sources in area of use. After handling, always wash hands and face
thoroughly with soap and water. Launder contaminated clothing prior to reuse.
Small spill and leak Contain spill, absorb with sand, coal or other absorbent material. Store contaminated
material in closed metal containers. Do not use traffic flares at spill locations. Use
appropriate personal protective equipment during clean-up.
Large spill and leak Refer to procedures in small spill and leak.
Engineering Controls Use general ventilation under normal conditions. Use mechanical ventilation if mist or vapour
is generated.
Section IX – Classification
TDG Road/Rail Not controlled under TDG (Canada) for pure Coal Tar. Solids
contaminated with tar are TDG material (see secondary materials
profile).
If the use of this material is other than that specified by the supplier, additional precautions may be required.
