SCHOLARSHIP 2021

Who is Eligible?

1. To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, entrants must be Juniors or Seniors

attending a fully accredited nonprofit or public college or university in Iowa who are full-
time journalism students seeking a career in broadcast journalism, maintaining at least a
“B” grade point average, and residing in the KGAN/KFXA viewing area.

2. Employees of Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., Sinclair Television Group, Inc., Sinclair
Communications, LLC, and any other company which owns, programs or provides other
services to television broadcast station KGAN (the “Station”), KFXA, The Greater Cedar
Rapids Community Foundation, their affiliated companies, advertising and promotion
agencies, any and all local television broadcast and cable stations, local radio and other
media companies, and the immediate family members of each are ineligible. The term
“immediate families” includes spouses, grandparents, parents, siblings, children and
grandchildren.

How to Apply for this Scholarship

The scholarship application is available beginning July 5, 2021, to download at

www.cbs2iowa.com or may be picked up at Station: KGAN, 600 Old Marion Rd NE,
Cedar Rapids, IA. Completed hard copy applications with all required documents must
be received at Station by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, August 18, 2021. Station is not
responsible for lost, late, or misdirected entries/mail or for printing errors.
The required documents are:
1. verification of your enrollment as a Junior or Senior attending a fully
accredited nonprofit or public college or university in Iowa
2. a copy of your most recent academic transcript
3. a one-page typed essay about your journalism career goals and financial
need.
4. copies of published work and/or YouTube/Vimeo link in which you appear or
which you wrote scripts
5. a list of your extracurricular and/or community activities

Review Process

After August 18, 2021, applications will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of three
(3) judges based on essay (50%), published work or video (15%), letters of
recommendation (12.5%), extra curricular activities (12.5%), and financial need (10%).
One winner will be chosen by the judges based on the criterion set forth above. The
winner will also be determined on a non-discriminatory basis consistent with national
public and IRS policies. Final approval of the winner will be by the Board of Directors of
the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

All applications received that are mutilated, tampered with, incorrect, illegible, or from
ineligible entrants will be void. All applications become the property of Sinclair
Broadcast Group, Inc., Sinclair Television Group, Inc. and the Station and will not be
acknowledged or returned.

Scholarship Award

1. One (1) winner will be chosen by the judges. The winner will receive a $500
scholarship paid on their behalf to their college/university from the Dave Shay – KGAN-
TV Broadcast Journalism Scholarship Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community
Foundation.

2. The winner will be notified by phone, and an award letter with scholarship
agreement will be mailed to them by the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.
After the signed scholarship agreement is returned to the Community Foundation, the
scholarship will be paid on the winner’s behalf.

3. If the winner cannot be notified within 30 days or does not timely sign and return the
scholarship agreement, then the scholarship will be forfeited, and an alternate winner
will be determined by the judges, as determined by the judges in their sole and absolute
discretion.

8. Sinclair Communications, LLC, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. and Sinclair Television
Group, Inc. are not responsible for any liabilities arising directly or indirectly from the
award or use of the scholarship.

9. In claiming your scholarship, you acknowledge that Sinclair Communications, LLC,

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. and Sinclair Television Group, Inc. have the right to
publicize your name, character, likeness, photograph, voice and the fact that you are the
winner for promotional purposes without financial remuneration.

Miscellaneous

Station reserves the right to make rules and contest changes and change the
aforementioned application and review dates.
