Part I. Indications and purposes of medication.

1. What are the indications for oral drug administration and giving medications through
Nasogastric/endoscopic tubes? Discuss your answers. (10 points)
Many drugs can be administered orally as liquids, capsules, tablets, or chewable tablets.
Because the oral route is the most convenient and usually the safest and least expensive,
it is the one most often used. However, it has limitations because of the way a drug
typically moves through the digestive tract.

Where possible, use liquids and, if changing from liquid to solid or vice versa, ensure that
the dose is re-calculated;
Ensure that tablets can be crushed or dissolved but do not use enteric coated or sustained
release forms in this manner;
Simplify the medication regimen if appropriate, so drugs can be given twice daily

2. What are the indications for giving medications via Intravenous (IV), Intradermal (ID),
Intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SQ), and inhalation? Discuss thoroughly. (15 points)

3. What are the reasons or purposes of mixing medications? Explain further. (5 points)
