wide array of disciplines that studies the overall function of a society as well as the interactions among individual members
of an institution. Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science are three fields of Social Science.
Too understand human problems and how to solve them, these fields are absolutely necessary. By studying how
humans configure their lives, we can find ways to make the world a better place. These fields are powerful tools to find
solutions to extraordinarily complex problems.

Definition of Culture, Society and Politics
Culture is the social behavior and norms found in human societies. The study of culture is called cultural
anthropology.
A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing the same
geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural
expectations. The study of society is called sociology.
Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations
between individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. The study of politics is referred to as political
science
Anthropology
 Anthropology comes from the Greek word anthropos which means man and ology which means man.
 Anthropology is the study of man. It is the study of human beings, their origin, their societies, and their
cultures.

Branches of Anthropology
1. Archaeology - examines the remains of ancient and historical human populations to promote an understanding of
how humans have adapted to their environment and developed.
2. Cultural Anthropology - study of society's culture through their beliefs, and practices.
3. Linguistic Anthropology – study of the language of a group of people and its relation to their culture.
4. Physical Anthropology – study of the origin, evolution, and diversity of people

Sociology
 Sociology is the study of society, social institutions, and social relationships
 The term sociology was first coined by August Comte in 1842.

Sociological Perspective – Understanding human behavior placing it within its broader social context
1. Symbolic Interactionism – viewed society as composed of symbols that people use to establish meaning, develop
their views of the world, and communicate with one another
2. Functionalist - views society as a system of interrelated parts, each with different function that contributes to society
3. Conflict Perspective - a theoretical framework in which society is viewed as composed as groups that are
competing for scarce resources
Political Science
 The systematic study of the state and the government
 State refers to the organized political community living under a single system of government
 Government refers to the group of authorized people who governs a country or a state
Scope of Political Science
1. Political Theory- entire body of doctrines relating to origin, form, behavior, and purposes of a state
2. Public Law- covers constitutional law, administrative law, and international law
3. Public Administration- methods and techniques used in actual management of state affairs by the branches of
government
