II. Context and Rationale

The Corona Virus (COVID-19) disease pandemic remains an issue and brings

excessive devastation affecting the people’s livelihood not just in terms of the economy,

security but also the education in most parts of the world, most especially the less-

economically developed countries. According to data of World Health Organization (WHO)

and Johns Hopkins University (2021), there are 168,599,045 confirmed cases of COVID-19,

including 3,507,477 deaths and affecting 220 countries and territories around the world The

crisis makes a big impact in all sectors of the world economy regardless of nationality and

level of education, To prevent the virus from spreading, governments around the world have

temporarily closed educational institutions for the welfare and safety of the students as well

as to the teachers. The data stated by United Nations International Children's Emergency

Fund (UNICEF) (2021), Schools with more than 168 million children globally have been

completely closed for almost an entire year due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

To keep the virus from spreading and save lives for every learner, President

Rodrigo Duterte and Secretary of Education Leonor M. Briones issued a memorandum to

suspend classes at all levels, and would not reopen until vaccine against COVID 19

available. According to the Department of Health (2021), Philippines have 1.22 million

confirmed covid -19 cases and 20,722 deaths. Despite the calls from other sectors for an

academic freeze in the effect of the Coronavirus outbreak, the Department of Education

insisted that education should not be threatened. Education for all (EFA) and no child left

behind as part of the Deped vision and mission.

In cognizance of the suspension of classroom teachings “Face to Face” in all public

and private schools, the Department of Education issued a memorandum (no. 18 s. 2020) as

a way to continue the learning process during COVID -19 pandemic through online and

modular-based modalities. This learning modality takes place between the teacher and the

learners who are geographically remote from each other during instruction. Online class

help and provide opportunities for social interaction, engaging learners, active participation
through the use of technologies like cellphone and computer accessed through internet. The

learners require to have good and stable internet connection since they are required to

submit assignments, outputs, exams online and attend virtual classes Modular-based

modality used Self- learning modules (SLM), Leaners Activity Sheets (LAS) and Simplified

Self-Learning Modules (SSLM) based on the Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

provided by the Deped, It serves as a complete guide of both teachers’ and students’

desired competencies. Teachers will monitor the progress of the learners, through text,

messenger, phone call, home visitation if needed, following the heath and standard

protocols. Teachers are finding it difficult to cope with this pandemic but they need to adapt

to the new normal ways of educating the students. As much as these initiatives appear to be

helpful for the learners, it’s such a way for the busy parents taking huge responsibilities in

taking part of their children’s learning development at times like this. This situation poses a

challenge to both parties because it exposes them to something unfamiliar.

The researchers chose to study the Comparative online and modular-based

modalities among grade seven students in mathematics. Using a single indicator, the

researchers attempted to discover if the performance of the students if they change by the

help of their chosen modalities. This study search to compare modular and online teaching

on three levels—pure modality, gender, and class rank. The researchers also would like to

compare and investigate whether or not one teaching modality is significantly more effective

than the other.

III. Action Research Questions

This study aims to compare the Aftermath Performance on Online and Modular-

Based Modalities of Grade 7 Students in Mathematics.

1. What is the aftermath performance of online –based modalities of Grade 7 students

in Mathematics?

2. What is the aftermath performance of modular-based modalities of Grade 7 students

in Mathematics
3. Is there a significant difference on the aftermath performance of grade 7 students in

mathematics using online and modular-based modalities?

IV. Methodology

This study is design to determine and compare the performance of the

respondents on their online and modular-based class under at the Department of

Education for this New Normal school year 2020-2021.

This research involves the aftermath performance on two different modalities:

online and modular based learning modalities of Grade 7 students in mathematics.

This comparative study that belongs to the quantitative research begins with the

accurate and precise data gathering from the respondents. The purpose of the

current study was to determine whether or not one of those two modalities, the online

or modular class will produce different (and possibly better) results in terms of

student perceptions of the overall learning experience and student satisfaction. The

two main goals of this study were (1) to compare the effectiveness of online, and

modular instruction, and (2) to examine the role of interactions in the effectiveness of

each educational method. In addition, a better understanding of the role of

interactions can help identify the areas of instruction that should be rethought and

redesigned when converting online to modular and vice versa of instruction.

According to Kay York (2017), a quantitative, causal comparative study sought to

determine if proficiency-based education has an effect on school climate. With

sweeping school reform across the United States, educators are seeking ways to

improve student achievement and maintain a positive school climate “Causal-

comparative research is a type of non-experimental investigation in which

researchers seek to identify cause and-effect relationships by forming groups of

individuals in whom the independent variable is present or absent… and then

determining whether the groups differ on the dependent variable”

A. Participants/Other Source of Data

The respondents of the study will be the Grade 7 High School

students of Fatima National High School of North Fatima District, Barangay

Fatima, General Santos City. The researchers will choose through purposive

sampling, 25 online and 25 modular students as participants for the study.

The participants will be answering the pre and post checklists provided by the

researchers to compare their academic progress and notions about the two

modalities. Their grades will also be compared quarterly to monitor the better

performance of the participants.

B. Research Instrument

Purposive Sampling Process ( dapat sa taas dawn )

Purposive Sampling will be used by this study. The researchers will

only choose the Grade 7 students who are enrolled into the specific modality

in Mathematics, either online or modular-based learning modality.

Checklist Schedule

A pre and post checklist schedule will be used in this study. The pre

and post checklist schedule serves as a tool to compare the performance

progress of Grade 7 students of Fatima National High School on online and

modular-based learning modalities. The Checklist tool will undergo extensive

correction and validation of the appropriate and knowledgeable validators

before it will be presented to the respondents.

Quarterly Grades

The quarterly grades of the respondents will be used in this study. The

grades will serves as the basis for the performance of the Grade 7 students in

undergoing online and modular classes in Mathematics. Prior to the gathering

of grades the researchers will seek permission to the respondents to use it in

their research study.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will secure a permit from the Schools Division

Superintendent of General Santos City. After approval, the researchers will be

also ensuring the appropriateness of checklist questions questionnaire form. The

following data gathering will be observed:

First, the preparation of the logistic requirements which includes the

venue, time survey questionnaire and respondents.

Second, before the conduct of the survey questionnaire, the researchers

will explain the objective and purpose of the study the methodology,

confidentiality and benefits including the contact number of researchers if ever

there will be a clarifications or verifications of the purpose.

Third is administering a survey questionnaire to the respondents. This will

consist two parts. The first part will be the demographic information that will serve

as the basis for the background of the participants. The second part will be the

survey questionnaires that consist of the questions about a Comparative Study:

Aftermath of the Performance of Online and Modular –Based Modalities of Grade

7 students in mathematics.

Lastly, the survey questionnaire will be retrieved by the participants.

Participants will be assured of confidentiality as explained before the conduct of

the survey.

The researchers will interpret the data to validate the survey.

D. Data Analysis Plan

The actual data analysis will occur when the researchers gather the

entire data and information set about the two modalities used in the study.

Since comparative research seek to compare two or more variables to prove

which will be the better one to use or to practice. The set of online survey-

checklist which will involve the demographic profiles of the respondents will

be answered by the selected pupils in a specific type of class will be analyzed

by the researchers using Two-Way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). ANOVA

will be used to analyze the “significant difference” of online and modular-

based learning modalities. According to Agnes Goz Percy (2009), the

analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test for differences (p < .05) in

attitude toward subject between face-to-face, online, and blended students.

The data gathered will be reviewed and will be validated by statistician for

precise and accuracy result.
