D. DEEPENING

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus told the disciples to go to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus
was. Some of them bowed before Him, while some doubted if He is the one in the mountain. He said to
them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of
all nations.” This signifies the commissioning of the disciples of Jesus to go on and continue His
unfinished work here on earth by means of proclaiming His words and teachings. “But beyond open
acceptance, this faith which Jesus praises also involves discipleship: an implicit commitment.” (CFC
487) It involves dedication and passion to their duty of continuing Christ’s mission here on earth. Jesus
wants to His disciples to accept their mission completely and unceasingly.
“Second is the nature of membership in the Kingdom: discipleship, or the following of Christ.” (CFC
739) It is already innate to us Christians that we are called to follow Christ Jesus through His works,
deeds and actions. At the same time, following Christ becomes a key to the door of the kingdom of God
that welcomes and accommodates each and every disciple of Christ here on earth. Therefore, we need
to exercise the spirit of discipleship in ourselves so that we may also motivate and inspire other
Christians in exercising their spirit of discipleship.
“The doctrine of the mission and identity of Jesus Christ is the core of every Christian Creed.” (CFC
527) In the spirit of mission, we need to acknowledge and accept the true identity of Christ present in
every Christian creed. It is where the source of our faith comes from that enables us to willingly accept
our mission that is to promote the Christian creed in the different parts of the world.

Link: What will be our response after we follow Jesus Christ in His words and teachings?
How does following Jesus Christ in His words and teachings change our lifestyle?

The Church is teaching us to respond to the call of Christ as his beloved disciples making
Christ's disciples to conform themselves to him until he is formed in them (cf. Gal 4:19). (CFC 562) In
the spirit of mission, we need to be like Jesus and to act like Jesus for others so that they can feel
Christ’s presence in their midst while at the same time, we are continuing Jesus’ mission here on earth.
Also, PCP II stressed the theme of “discipleship”: responding to the Call of Christ, in his
Community, the Church (cf. PCP II 64-153). (CFC 741) Following Jesus in continuing His mission is to
prioritize and to respond to the call of the Church He had established 2000 years ago. It is in this sense
that in being Jesus’ disciples, we need first to prioritize other people before attending our own needs in
life. Through this, we may become worthy disciples of Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord.
Being a disciple of Jesus requires us to know have an encounter with Him. To know Jesus
means being committed to following him, being his disciple (cf. PCP II 34, 44). (CFC 473) It is surreal to
think that we are living up and continuing the mission of Christ without knowing him and having and
encounter of Him first. It will be a great discrepant to our mission and might lead us to accusation that
can be devastating. Knowing Jesus is one of the primary requirements in order to continue His mission.
It is also important that in knowing Jesus, we must be committed not only to Him as our Master but to
His Father in heaven. It is the top requirement we need in order to His disciple.

How do we celebrate our response in following Christ in His words and teachings?
In his teaching, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray with a purified heart, with lively and
persevering faith, with filial boldness. (CCC 2621) As disciples of Jesus Christ, we respond to His call
by praying without ceasing and by conserving our faith centered in Him. In following Jesus, we may
experience different challenges and trials in spreading His words and teachings. In order to conquer
and overcome it, we need to talk and to communicate with Jesus through the spirit of praying for us to
seek and adopt guidance and counsel from Him, the Son of the Good Counsel.
In being disciples of Jesus, we need to be accommodating and coordinating to one another and
even to audience. By his word, through signs that manifest the reign of God, and by sending out his
disciples, Jesus calls all people to come together around him. (CCC 542) Coordination and acceptance
is one of the vital factors we need to consider in following Jesus Christ. We need coordination for us to
spread Jesus’ words and teachings easily and accessible to all. On the other hand, we need
acceptance for us to freely welcome one’s culture and traditions. In this way, we can easily identify
there sensitive moments in their life and on what aspect of their life we need to focus and deal more.
