ME/MSE 4790 Materials Selection and Design

Project

Conduct your own case study in materials selection.

Please prepare a formal report (no hand writing) that covers, at minimum, the following:
(a) description of the problem
(b) current materials used for this application (if applicable)
(c) a translation table
(d) simplified schematic illustrating loading, heat transfer, etc.
(e) derivation of the performance / material indices, with words describing steps
(f) based on your analysis, provide a small subset of possible suitable materials, showing
relevant charts created in CES EduPack
(g) provide commentary on your selection(s) and possible hybrid solutions that may have
even better performance
(h) create a Processing-Structure-Properties-Performance (PSPP) map for one of the
materials selected
(i) describe the next steps in deciding upon the final selection from this subset

In addition, please prepare a Powerpoint slide show with a maximum of five slides covering
items (a), (d), (e), (f), (g), and (h).

Your project grade will be based on the effective use of the tools of the text and software as well
as the clarity and completeness of the figures and written presentation. You will be assessed on
your conclusions – are they convincing and shed insight on the selection of materials for this
problem? You must use CES EduPack in your analysis. Please avoid case studies that are
simply slight modifications of case studies in the textbook. If you are in doubt about the one you
are considering, please email me your case study description and I will let you know whether
your proposed case study is suitable for this project. Keep in mind that design is an iterative
process. In any in-depth analysis, you will need to go through multiple iterations and
refinements to get the best outcome.

For the PSPP map, you need to identify at least three properties critical for the performance of
your application. You need to conduct enough research to understand the structure at all relevant
scales of your selected material, from possibly the nanoscopic scale to microscopic to possibly
higher length scales, and how this structure links to the properties. You need to show the most
logical processing steps and their linkage in how they control each feature of the structure.
