PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Binds to and activates opioid receptors at Treatment of moderate to severe pain.

Complications Medication Administration


Constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, PO: 10 mg q4h PRN. May give
euphoric mood, slow and shallow breathing, depression, up to 30 mg q4h.
fatigue, sleep apnea, low BP, weakness, tachycardia,
tachypnea, anxiety, polydipsia. IV: 1-4 mg q1-4h PRN. May give
up to 10 mg q4h.

Contraindications/Precautions
Asthma, COPD, scoliosis, sleep apnea, obesity, CNS
depressants, risk for addiction.
Nursing Interventions
Have Narcan on hand
Monitor respirations
Assess pain level
Monitor I/Os
Interactions
CNS depressants (alcohol, cannabis, antihistamines,
opioids, sedatives, hypnotics)
MOAIs, muscle relaxants, cimetidine, diuretics,
anticholinergics, St. John's Wort
Client Education
Encourage added fiber in diet
Do not drive or operate heavy
