This document provides criteria and significance ratings for environmental impacts. It rates impacts from 4 to 1, with 4 being major impacts that require immediate action, such as those that breach regulations or cause immediate environmental damage. A rating of 3 indicates significant impacts that require action within a set timeframe. These could include impacts that are not fully controlled or likely to increase. A rating of 2 refers to minor impacts where abnormal conditions are unlikely to occur or have low impact. A rating of 1 means impacts are negligible with minimal effect even in abnormal conditions.

• Aspect is not currently controlled under normal condition 4 (Major)
• ‘Abnormal’ condition would breach regulations Immediate action and • Evidence of / high probability of immediate environmental damage control required • Effect of impacts is extensive • In breach of legislation • Interested parties have voiced concerns • Repeated complaints received (internal/external)
• Aspect is not fully controlled under normal conditions 3 (Significant)
• Effect of ‘normal’ condition impacts are moderate • Abnormal condition impacts are likely to occur and/or unlikely to be detected Action required within • Impacts are likely to increase based on planned activities set timeframe, with • Emergency situation would cause major environmental impact scheduled review of effectiveness • Potential breach of legislation • In breach of company policy or other non-legal compliance obligation • Financial / business threat from impacts • Interested parties aware of issue • Complaint received (internal/external) • Multiple instances of same issue / large volumes involved
• Aspect controlled under normal conditions 2 (Minor)
• Abnormal condition impacts are unlikely to occur and/or likely to be detected • Effect and probability of any impact is low Additional actions • No potential for breach of legislation or other compliance obligation possible; recommend to review in the future • Single instance of issue / small quantities involved
• Aspect controlled under normal and abnormal conditions 1 (Negligible)
• No additional impact arising from emergency condition Limited additional • Effect and probability of any impact is minimal action possible; review • Very small quantities involved in the future may be required Note: meeting one of the criteria is enough for the aspect to be considered at the highest rating.
