Handout: Prefix and Suffix

A prefix is a syllable added before a


root word. A root word is the
original word where a new word
comes from.

Examples: review, display,


insufficient, imperfect, alive,
international

A suffix is a syllable added after a


root word.

Examples: actor, beautiful,


protection, kindness, silently
Examples of Root words:

actively - (root word- active)


imagination – (root word- imagine)
friendship - (root word- friend)

One suffix is "-ion". It means "the act of".


Adding "-ion" to the verb "attract" gives
you "attraction".

Some suffixes turn verbs into


adjectives. One example is "-ive".
"Create" is a verb. It becomes
“Creative”.

The suffix "-ful" means "full of". If you


add "-ful" to the noun "color", you make
the adjective "colorful".
