SAFETY REMINDERS
Our goal is to make this ship as safe as possible. To accomplish that goal, every crew member must follow
the safety rules at all times.
Daily safety procedures:
Verify that all watertight and weather doors are dogged. If doors must open, see that they are securely
hooked.
Make sure all emergency escapes are easily accessible and clear of obstructions.
Inspect safety and firefighting equipment to make sure all of the items and present, functional, and easily
located.
Secure equipment so that nothing can move freely. Perform the following in each inspection: verify that
life preservers do not have any rips or tears. Check that ring buoys are mounted in the proper location.
Check that both water lights and flashlights have batteries. Replace the batteries if the lights are not
working or seem too dim.
Check that SCBA air tanks are full and that the air hoses are not cracked.

On entering empty tanks:

Empty tanks can contain toxic or explosive gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Do not
enter a tank until the First Engineer inspects it.
Engineers: Ventilate the tank before entering. Always use an SCBA in an empty tank. And never enter a
tank alone. Others should stand by in the case you have difficulty breathing or lose consciousness.

6) READING

Mata Kuliah : Maritime English Materi Kuliah : Maintenance and repair

To: Elaine_Jones@drydockrepair.com
From: withers.j@brightonshipping.com
Re: First Mate arrives in dry dock

Dear Ms. Jones

The First Mate is on schedule to arrive in dry dock this
Wednesday. Before we arrive, I wanted to make sure you are
aware of the kind of repairs and maintenance we’ll need. That
way, you can have everything ready shore side. Your company
has always done an excellent job repairing our equipment.
You’re our favorite contractor for minor repairs. However,
we’ve had several breakdowns and the ship’s coating is
deteriorating, so this job may be a bit larger than you’re used to
handling.
Of course, we’ll need you to do the usual maintenance, like
slushing the wires with grease and changing the screens on the
sea chests. We should test the sea valves for oxidation, too. But
we’re also going to need a new coating for the hull and the deck.
I’ve talked to several people about the best kind of coating. I
prefer a rubberized coating for the deck. However, several of
my crew members are arguing for plastic or epoxy coating. I’ve
also heard that zinc can help preserve the hull. Do you have any
recommendations? Has your company worked with any of these
types of coating before?
Please get back to me as soon as possible so we can choose a
material.
Thanks for all your good work,
Captain John Withers
