Activity Plan: Color Changing Milk

Objective: Children will understand that when we mix one color with another
color it will create a different color

Materials: Milk, Liquid Food Coloring, Q-Tips, Dish Soap, 6 Shallow Bowls

Scaffolding: This activity builds upon children's prior knowledge of cause and
effect as well as prior knowledge about mixing colors while painting.

Procedure: Step 1: Place 3 bowls onto the activity table and fill each bowl
halfway with milk.

Step 2: Next, in the first bowl, squirt 4-5 drops of blue liquid food coloring on one
end and 4-5 drops of yellow food coloring on the other end. Be careful not to
disturb the bowl with any movement. Following this procedure, squirt 4-5 drops of
red and blue liquid food coloring in the next bowl. Finally, squirt 4-5 drops of red
and yellow liquid food coloring in the third bowl.

Step 3: Take one Q-Tip and coat the cotton with dish soap.

Step 4: Place the soap covered end of the Q-Tip into the center of the first bowl
and allow the colors to swirl together and create a new color. Repeat this step
with the remaining two bowls.

Step 5: Allow the children to fill the remaining three bowls with milk, and to freely
add and mix the colors of their choosing.

DAP support: This activity supports fine motor development via

holding/squeezing food coloring bottles, pouring milk, and utilizing Q-Tips.

“Children make progress through opportunities for open-ended activities that

develop their hand muscles and fine motor skills” (DAP, page 117)

This activity is embedded in the children’s daily work and play and is integrated
with other domains.
“Science work may result from answering questions or exploring interests that
emerge as children are cooking, looking at a book, painting, or talking about
something from home.” (DAP, page 141)

Open ended questions for children:

1) What do you think happens when we mix two colors together? Why?

2) What does this color remind you of?

3) What do you think would happen if we mixed every color of the rainbow
together?

4) What would happen if we added black food coloring to our bowl?

5) What would happen if we stirred our colors together with a spoon?

6) What would you name the color you have created in this bowl?
