Exam Requirements

I am currently a student at the College of Southern Nevada pursuing my Early Childhood

Education Associate in Arts Degree. Upon completion of this degree, I will pursue my bachelor's

in Early Childhood Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Before I can begin my

studies at UNLV, I must first pass all of my Praxis Core exams. The three exams cover Reading,

Writing, and Math. A passing score for the Reading exam is 156 points, for Writing it is 162

points, and for Math, it is 150 points.

Exam Preparation

To prepare for the Praxis Core exams I first read about the general rules and requirements

of the exams. Next, I skimmed through each of the study guides on the ETS Praxis website. It

took approximately 1 hour per day for 4 days to review the exams using these study guides. After

my brief review of the study guides, I took a practice exam for Reading, Writing, and Math.

Exam Results

The first practice exam that I took was for the Reading exam. In the Reading exam, I

scored in the 62% range meaning that I need improvement. In the Writing exam, I scored in the

78% range meaning that I am close to passing, but I still need to study more. Finally, in Math, I

scored in the 39% range meaning that I need to significantly improve. I am not entirely surprised

at my score on the Math practice exam; however, I am surprised that I did not do better on the

Reading practice exam.

Future Exam Preparation

I am honestly glad that I had to do this analysis because I previously overestimated my

potential scores on these exams. Now that I have a realistic idea of where I am starting from, I

know where I need to focus my studying. To prepare for the official Praxis Core exams I am

going to purchase a book from Amazon and also utilize various online resources. I will also

retake the practice exams after a while to monitor my progress and pinpoint areas still in need of

improvement.
