Praxis Analysis Paper 2

The Praxis exams are necessary to pass in order to be admitted into the bachelor’s

program and UNLV, UNR, or NSC. The tests are used to measure core academic skills that are

essential for all teachers. No matter what grade-level you plan to teach, the praxis exams were

created to assess the measurement of skills and content knowledge. It is necessary to pass these

exams in order to be admitted into the bachelor’s program because colleges and universities use

the tests to evaluate the individuals before their entry. The common core praxis exams are Math,

Reading, and Writing. There are additional exams that are necessary to take depending on the

type of education career you want to pursue. Each exam has a score requirement that must be

reached in order to pass. The passing score for the math exam is 150, the writing is 162, and the

reading exam is a minimum score of 156.

There are a ton of websites and tools that are available to students to practice for the

praxis exams. I used the Khan Academy Praxis Core Prep to formulate my personal study plan. It

asked me a series of questions on all three subjects and based on my performance generated a

study guide. I did not get through the entire study guide, but it was extremely helpful in

providing videos and tips on subject matters I needed a refresher on. The other sites had options

for study guides and flashcards but required students to purchase them. In the end, I stuck with

Khan Academy because it was free and tailored to my specific needs.

After taking the practice exams, my lowest score was the reading test. I scored 45%

which means I need to make significant improvements if I want to pass. I will be honest and say

that I did the reading exam right after the math and I could not fully concentrate. I took the rest

of the day to relax and did the writing exam the following day and scored 78%. Scoring a 78%

means I am borderline passing the exam and I did not answer the essay portions. I do believe my

score would have been higher if I would have answered the two essays at the end. My math score

was 70% which is also borderline passing. I believe that I will successfully pass the official

praxis exams with more preparation.

When I began taking the exams, I felt confident that I did not need to prepare. Once I

reviewed my scores, I quickly realized that was not the case. These exams are significantly

important to being a future educator and I will have to do extensive studying if I want to pass. In

addition to using the online tools provided, I plan to purchase a study book. I think studying a

hardcopy of a book will be more accommodating to my lifestyle. Organizing my schedule is

necessary for task completion with four children running around the house. If I purchase the

book I will be able to go outside, upstairs, and other places without moving my entire laptop.

Taking the practice exams was an eye opener for me, and I am glad I have time to better prepare

myself.
