Exam Requirements

When I started ECE 250, my professor told us that we needed to take what is called the

Praxis exam to continue our teaching education at UNLV, UNR, and NSC for our Bachelor’s

degree. After hearing about this exam, I went to look it up online and realized I was not able to

register for upper-level courses until I passed the Praxis exams for reading, math, and writing. In

order for a student to get into the education program, that student must pass all three sections of

the Praxis Core Exam. I also found out that the requirement to pass the math section was to

obtain a score of 150. To pass the reading section, I must get a score of 156. To pass the writing

section of the test, I have to obtain a score of 162. If I take all three tests and do not pass a part

of the test, I can return and take that section again.

Exam Preparation

Before I took the Praxis tests on the Praxis website (ets.org), I read through the study

companion for the writing, reading, and math tests. I also went to the Khan Academy website to

practice on my math because math is one of my harder courses I took while at CSN. After

reading the study companions and working on some problems from the Kahn Academy website,

I then took the practice test for writing, reading, and math on the mometrix.com website. I took

each practice test one time.

For my math score, I received 62 percent. That score means I need improvement to pass

the Praxis exam for math. For the reading test, I received a score of 43 percent. Forty-three

percent means I need a significant improvement to pass the reading section of the Praxis exam. I

received a score of 70 percent for the writing portion of the Praxis exam. I am on the borderline

of passing the writing part of the exam.

Future Exam Preparation

Since I have not taken the Praxis exam and likely would not pass, I will reread the study

companion. I will also purchase the ETS practice test to help me understand each portion of the

test so that I can improve my chances of passing the exam. Because I need improvement in both

math and reading, I am strongly considering getting a tutor to help me in both these areas. I will

also redo the practice tests on the mometrix.com website so that I can see if I improve from the

last time I took the practice tests.
