Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

Teaching is all I have ever wanted to do in my life; I have always said that someday I will

become a teacher. However, to become a teacher is not easy as it sounds. You must not only go

through college; you must pass the state exams that certify you to be a teacher. In the state of

Nevada, an individual who wishes to become a teacher is required to pass what is called the

Praxis Core Exam before entering the bachelor’s program of Education at University of Nevada

in Las Vegas, Nevada State College, or University of Nevada in Reno. The Praxis Core Exam

consists of three sections: math, writing, and reading. To pass the math exam, you must receive a

score of 150. To pass the reading exam, you must receive a score of 156. Finally, you must

receive a score of 162 on the writing exam to pass.

Exam Preparation

Because the Praxis Core Exam is a very serious exam, I wanted to take studying seriously

and try my best to pass the exam even though it was only a practice exam. In the beginning of

February, I signed up for the Kahn Academy Practice Praxis course. I was scheduled every

Tuesday and Thursday to take lessons to be prepared for this practice exam. I was doing great for

the first month, especially for the math courses. However, life caught up with me and I got busy

between life and school. In addition to this, I went on a vacation from March 28th to April 7th, so

I fell behind in school even more and did not give myself time to study enough for the exam. In

the end, I realized that I procrastinated these exams, overloaded myself with studying, and

rushed through these exams which was not a good idea.

Exam Results

After completing the exams, I found that I was not happy with myself. I first completed

the reading exam and scored a 50%, which states that I need significant improvement to pass the

real exam. Considering I was in AP and honors English classes throughout high school I thought

I would do a lot better, but that was not the case. I then did the writing exam, where I scored a

73%. This means that I am “borderline” to passing the real Praxis exam, which means that I must

put more effort into my studying. Finally, I completed the math exam and received a 78%, which

is also a borderline passing grade. I am not happy with my results, but I have learned that I must

take the real exam more seriously and start studying every week so that I can enter the UNLV

Bachelors program next fall.

Future Exam Preparation

To be more prepared for the real Praxis exam in the future, I will most definitely take

studying more seriously. I feel like the Kahn Academy practice courses were helping me, so I

must make sure to stay on those courses and study every Tuesday and Thursday as I planned. As

soon as I am finished with school, I will most likely consider registering for different practice

courses to take along with the Kahn Academy courses so that my main focus is preparing myself

to pass the exam. In addition to this, I will ensure that I do not have any trips or vacations

planned around the exam so that I am not rushing to do things all at once. In all, I need to make

sure that all my focus is on the Praxis Core Exam, and I do not procrastinate to study.
